Decoding and methods for eliminating error codes on Ford Focus

Such a complex mechanism as a modern car includes many systems and components. They must work harmoniously, only then the car will behave well. Unfortunately, most car systems, and Ford is no exception, are under constant load. Forces acting on the materials of spare parts can eventually provoke destruction. Despite the fact that we all know that there are no eternal manisms, breakdowns often turn into stress. Especially if the owner cannot understand what the problem is.

Modern cars provide the ability to quickly find a broken part or system in order to eliminate the “symptoms” and quickly return the car to its wheels. If you have already used the troubleshooting system, you know that they all look like Ford Focus 2 error codes. The computer itself looks for problems and reports them to the driver through short coded messages. To gain practical benefit from such testing, we must unravel the code. How to do it yourself, read the material.

Features of self-diagnosis

Owners of Ford cars can independently diagnose their car; the on-board computer was created for this purpose so that they can understand what trouble has happened to the car without opening the hood. But self-diagnosis also involves a certain risk due to the fact that the test is carried out by a computer. Electronics also break down, glitch and freeze. No one can give a 100% guarantee that the computer will do its job correctly and will not let the driver down when testing the car.

This does not mean that you need to go to a car service center in any case, as soon as a problem arises. Diagnostics performed by professional technicians usually come at a cost to the driver. And it doesn’t always turn out to be so obligatory.

Just keep in mind - if the computer shows a breakdown that you are sure does not exist, do not rush to buy a spare part. As we said, testing is a hint, not a guaranteed answer.

About car diagnostics

Modern cars are equipped with a large number of different sensors that serve to monitor and control the components and assemblies of the car. The signals from them are sent to the on-board computer, which analyzes them and issues appropriate signals. The computer reports any malfunctions that occur to the driver for decision-making. After receiving such signals, it is advisable to conduct a comprehensive check of all systems in specialized centers.

Some owners carry out such diagnostics themselves. You can do such a check with a special motor tester or using a laptop and a special program. However, it should be noted that the accuracy of such a check is not as accurate as in specialized workshops, and even if you compare it from the perspective of your experience and the service station workers, then again, the gain is not in your favor.

On-board computers of modern cars can carry out self-diagnosis of controlled vehicle systems with great accuracy. If their presence causes concern to the owner, you should contact specialists for help.

How to diagnose

First, turn on the ignition; do not start the engine. Hold down the button that resets the mileage. It is located on the dashboard of the car. This button must be pressed for several seconds and, continuing to hold it, move the key to the next position.

If you do everything correctly, “Test” will appear on the display.

As a result of such self-diagnosis, the computer will issue cipher codes that indicate certain breakdowns. Experts say it's not recommended to expect ultra-accurate results, but the test can be useful in many situations. If the machine is not working as it should, the first thing you need to do is diagnose it yourself.

Deciphering error codes

Ford displays the errors found in encoded form. In order to derive practical benefit from the information, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the transcripts. Note that possible errors on the car’s on-board computer are divided into four large groups:

  • sensor errors
  • engine breakdown
  • problems in the electrical circuit
  • other problems

Below we will look at the most common types of problems detected by on-board computers. Since a modern car is literally filled with a variety of sensors designed to make life easier for the driver, they play the role of an intermediary between the mechanics and the electronic PC. If something goes wrong, a nearby sensor detects it, so the driver knows that there is a problem.

Quite often, for example, error P0420 occurs on a Ford Focus 2 after self-testing.

It means that the catalyst system has failed. But what is a catalyst and what to do if, according to error P0420, it does not work as it should? A catalyst is a device installed on a car engine to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. It is equally relevant for both gasoline and diesel cars.

Is it inconvenient that the P0420 code does not allow you to understand what exactly happened? Like, for example, error P0620. If the driver wants to decipher the code, he will most likely receive a one-word answer - generator.

There is something wrong with the generator, most likely the output voltage does not match the parameters. The deviation at the output is what the sensor records.

Another problem detected by the on-board computer is error P2008 - the intake manifold or the electrical circuit that controls it operates intermittently.

And error P2303 most often indicates that the car’s power cable has become frayed. The name of the problem itself sounds like this: the ignition coil is not working correctly/intermittently.

Error U1900 is especially curious, since in many cases it is preceded by a message on the on-board computer screen that frightens drivers: “Driver malfunction.”

Getting seriously worried, the car enthusiast turns on the test and it turns out that everything is in order with the engine, but a problem is discovered called “no connection via the CAN bus.” Try to fix it by removing the terminals from the battery and resetting the error in auto mode.

  • Error C1306 – Steering Wheel Angle

6.2.2. Self-diagnosis system and fault codes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Test equipment

Hand-held scanners are the most convenient and versatile devices for checking engine control systems on later models.

OBD-I systems (pre-1995 models)

The electronic control unit has a built-in self-diagnosis system (On Board Diagnosis (OBD) system), which serves to troubleshoot the system and turns on the engine warning light on the instrument panel if a malfunction is detected. The fault code is stored in the memory of the electronic control unit and is available for reading.

Reading fault codes for OBD-I systems

To read the fault codes stored in the memory of the electronic control unit, connect the STI and GND terminals of the diagnostic connection connector.

Connect a voltmeter to the STO terminal and vehicle ground. Turn on the ignition and count the number of times the gauge needle deflects or the check engine light blinks. For example, code 34 will be displayed as 3 long flashes of the light, pause, 4 short flashes.

Clearing OBD-I DTCs

To clear fault codes, disconnect the negative battery cable and depress the brake pedal for more than 5 seconds.

OBD-I DTCs (1993-1995 models, except 1994 and 1995 models with 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission)

OBD-I Trouble Codes (1994 and 1995 Models with 4-Cylinder Engine and Automatic Transmission)

OBD-II systems (models since 1996)

Diagnostic connector for connecting the OBD-II system

The connector is located under the instrument panel on the driver's side.

Models since 1996 have a second-generation OBD-II self-diagnosis system. Access to the electronic control unit of this system can only be obtained using a special scanner, which must be connected to the 16-pin diagnostic connection connector located under the instrument panel. If a malfunction is detected, the electronic control unit turns on the warning light on the instrument panel and stores the malfunction code in memory.

Reading OBD-II System Trouble Codes

To read OBD-II system fault codes, use a special scanner, which must be connected to the diagnostic connector. If you don’t have a scanner, you need to contact a specialist.

Clearing OBD-II DTCs

To clear OBD-II system fault codes, you must use a special scanner.

The on-board computer and control electronics on the second Focus rarely present unpleasant surprises to the owners. Electronic control units are quite simple, and the modular installation system allows you to accurately localize an electronic fault. However, sometimes errors occur that are not related to the reliability of electronic modules, but to the reliability of wiring and the quality of contact processing. Error U1900 can appear unexpectedly and disappear just as unexpectedly. Let's find out together what it is and how to fix it.

Errors indicating motor malfunctions

U1900, what is this error on Ford Focus 2?

If error u1900 occurs, the panel may display the following message.

All electronic modules that are responsible for the operation and correction of engine settings, ensuring the operation of the power supply system, ignition and other important electrical circuits are interconnected by CAN buses or high-speed data transfer buses. At the slightest disruption in communication between the modules, the on-board computer warns about this with error messages. Here is a list of errors that are associated with CAN buses:

  • IC U1900-60 - data reception error due to bus fault, the most common error, but there may be other messages;
  • IC U2200-20 - occurs when the odometer does not work correctly;
  • IC U2510-20 - indicates a communication breakdown in the CAN communication bus.

If the high-speed bus is damaged, the computer may display error U0001-E1 .

Codes for other problems

Using the installed on-board computer on this model, you can receive messages about a number of other problems. These may include the following problems:

  • P1000
    – reports operation without checking the TOBD system. In most cases, it can occur after the memory has been reset. In some cases, automatic calibration is possible and the error may disappear on its own;
  • P2008
    – problems in the intake manifold;
  • P1131
    is a message about problems in the lambda probe;
  • P2303

    – problems connecting to the bus;
  • U0401
    – incorrect data is coming from the ECM.

The main symptoms of error IC U1900-60

The symptoms of these malfunctions are unpleasant, and their occurrence does not depend in any way on the year of manufacture, configuration, or engine type:

  • The instrument panel is glitchy, all warning lamps light up at the same time;
  • The tachometer needle suddenly drops to zero, twitches, and incorrectly displays the number of revolutions;
  • the speedometer needle drops to zero;
  • the odometer does not count mileage;
  • the engine continues to run, but a message appears on the display indicating that the acceleration rate has been reduced;
  • the coolant temperature rises;
  • The Check Engine light comes on periodically.

Code u1900 on diagnostics.

When scanning for errors, the computer displays one of the errors listed above, which means that it’s time to fix the IC U1900-60 error yourself if the machine is no longer under warranty. At the dealership, they will charge a decent amount for work and diagnostics, and they will also force you to replace the spark plugs, electronic accelerator pedal, fuel pump module, in short, they will push the stale product at a higher price. Therefore, we will figure it out ourselves.

Problems with electrical circuits

Such codes will indicate malfunctions in the control circuits of the vehicle systems:

  • P0200-P0212
    control of injector operation;
  • P0213
    – signal from the first or second cold start injectors;
  • P0230-P0233
    – control of the fuel pump;
  • P0320-P0323
    – control of ignition distribution;
  • P0325
    – signal from the first sensor indicating detonation.

How to fix error U1900 on Ford Focus 2

As a rule, resetting the on-board computer errors and removing the terminal from the battery does not really do anything. The error may disappear for a while, but will appear again. The dashboard self-test mode is also of little use - the test will be successful if at this moment the CAN bus is working normally. The only way out is to solder the contacts on the instrument panel board.

Here are the contacts that need to be soldered:

To get to them, you need to remove and completely disassemble the tidy. We do it like this:

  1. Move the steering column as far as possible toward the driver and down.
  2. Remove the plastic covers under the steering wheel and unscrew the two screws.
  3. Unscrew the two screws under the tachometer and speedometer scales.
  4. Pulling the visor up, we pry the tidy up from above and release the lock.
  5. We take out the panel towards ourselves and disconnect the terminal block.

conclusions

Thus, in 99% of cases, the U1900 error disappears forever. Successful repair and stable operation of electronics!

I think that as a result of restarting the computer, this error should disappear, otherwise you will have to fiddle with checking contacts for a long time.

The auto diagnostician himself! But somehow I’m already tired of fighting this error. Initially there was a blow to the engine control unit and it fell into a hole. I placed the block on the box, and now I have already pushed it onto the battery. There was no error P1900. but due to water ingress, the pin in the ecu from the immobilizer rotted and I threw the “snot” straight. Everything worked OK." Then the genor was full - repaired - integral, diode bridge. The battery light came on and the exclamation mark came on. Error P1246. I thought that they sold a non-coded Integra, it was charging, I gave up and drove on. Then there was another repair of the generator according to the same scheme, about 5 years later, only bearings were added. Then the power steering began to fail (the wiring on the power steering was frayed, first repaired, and then changed the chip). After a while, “Failure” began to appear on the display. EGUR", periodically, and then permanently, the speedometer and odometer went out accordingly. I soldered the instrument panel, the engine ECU, all the legs in and out, threw a pair of (twisted) CAN from the power steering unit to the dashboard and to the ECU. I changed the electric power steering (I've already disassembled mine three times, the circuits are normal, the keys are not scorched, mine turned out to be in good working order. Now I ordered the engine ECU. While it's going, I'll try to throw in another instrument panel, mine will still need to be changed without legs. But still, there is a suspicion of a microcrack in the ECU in the board, I’ll install a new one, I’ll dig around more carefully. This is the “shoemaker without boots.”

There are also problems with contact. The power wire goes to the external fuse box. The contact is under it. It often turns sour and creates problems for the shield.

    21. Should I fix P0193 immediately?
    22. Recommended Tools to Fix Code P0193

    What does code P0193 mean?

    Trouble code P0193 indicates a problem with the fuel rail pressure sensor. When the engine control module (PCM) detects that the fuel rail pressure is outside the specified range, it generates code P0193.

    The fuel pressure sensor must provide the correct information so that the ECU can control the fuel injectors and inject the correct amount of fuel for efficient combustion.

    The electrical resistance of the sensor depends on the pressure in the fuel rail. As the pressure increases, the resistance of the sensor increases, and as the pressure decreases, the resistance also decreases. This change in resistance affects the signal at the sensor terminals supplied to the ECU. Faulty fuel rail pressure sends an incorrect signal to the controller, causing trouble code P0193.

    Symptoms of P0193

    • Check Engine Light.
    • The engine will not start.
    • Acceleration problems.
    • The engine takes longer to start than usual.
    • Loss of power.
    • Increased fuel consumption.
    • Abnormal smell from the exhaust pipe.

    Causes of P0193

    • Low pressure in the fuel rail.
    • Faulty fuel pump.
    • The fuel filter is clogged.
    • Damaged or worn wiring.
    • Vacuum leak/air leak.
    • Faulty fuel pressure regulator.

    Troubleshooting P0193

    • Make sure the fuel tank is not empty.
    • Repair faulty connections.
    • Replace the dirty fuel filter.

    How to diagnose code P0193?

    Connect your car charger

    When diagnosing error P0193, the ignition must be turned on. The battery will drain, which may cause additional fault codes to appear. To avoid this problem, buy a car charger and always connect it when diagnosing.

    Connect OBD2 scanner

    An OBD2 scanner is required to read trouble codes. There are two types of OBD2 scanners - regular adapters for a low price, and expensive ones for advanced scanning, which also include a number of other functions.

    You can also use a multimeter to measure resistance, but this is time consuming and not preferred.

    Disconnect and reconnect the battery

    Sometimes the ECU does strange things that cause sensors to malfunction. An easy way to solve this problem is to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and then reconnect it. This resets all sensors in the car.

    Check the fuel pump

    To check if the fuel pump is working properly, listen to the sound it makes when you start the car. If the engine does not start, but you can hear the fuel pump running, the fuel filter may be clogged and needs to be replaced.

    Check reference voltage

    If the above steps are completed successfully, the next task is to check the fuel pressure sensor reference voltage at the fuel rail.

    Turn the ignition on, then use a digital multimeter to check the voltage. It should be 5 Volts. If the reading is not close to 5 volts, you need to check the connections.

    Check the ground

    Often the P0193 trouble code is generated due to poor ground contact. To test the ground wiring, connect one end of the jumper cable to a good ground point on the engine and the other end to the negative terminal of the battery.

    Check the voltage readings before and after connecting the jumper to see the difference. If the readings improve when the jumper is connected, there is a grounding problem.

    Codes related to P0193

    • P0190 - Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit malfunction.
    • P0191 - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance.
    • P0192 - Fuel pressure sensor, low signal.
    • P0193 - Fuel pressure sensor, high signal level.
    • P0194 - Fuel pressure sensor, signal intermittent.

    P0190 - P0194 are metering circuit codes. Other faults, such as fuel pressure too low - P0087, are usually related to problems with the fuel pump and fuel line.

    How to replace the fuel rail pressure sensor?

    If you prefer to repair your car yourself, you can easily replace the fuel rail pressure sensor.

    • Socket wrench.
    • Gloves.
    • Cleaning cloth.
    • Protective glasses.

    Step 1: Park the car on a level surface

    Make sure your vehicle is parked on a level surface with the parking brake engaged.

    Step 2: Disconnect the battery

    Open the hood and locate the negative battery terminal. Take it off.

    Step 3: Locate the fuel rail pressure sensor

    You will have to remove the engine cover and locate the fuel rail pressure sensor. It can be located in the center or at the end of the ramp.

    Step 4: Remove the sensor

    Place a rag and unscrew the pressure sensor from the fuel rail using a screwdriver or socket wrench.

    Step 5: Cleaning Contacts

    Using electrical contact cleaner, clean the connector that goes to the sensor.

    Step 6: Install the new sensor

    Install the new fuel rail sensor in place and connect the wire connector. Be sure to tighten all screws and bolts.

    Step 7: Connect the battery

    Connect the negative terminal of the battery and start the engine.

    Should I fix P0193 immediately?

    Trouble code P0193 must be corrected immediately as it causes drivability problems. If you ignore the P0193 code for too long, it can cause engine damage and at some point the car will not start.

    How does error P2008 appear on Ford engines?

    The malfunction of the intake manifold flap drive is unstable. This is due to the design feature of the vacuum (IMRC valve) damper control valve. As a rule, if we notice the following symptoms, then it is worth checking the vacuum valves of the intake manifold flap actuator:

    • periodic loss of traction;
    • the Check Engine light comes on from time to time;
    • slight loss of power, does not appear sharply, but power can drop steadily;
    • As the engine temperature increases, throttle response is lost and dips may occur during acceleration;
    • hot jerks;
    • increased fuel consumption is possible.

    The main thing is that troubles appear when the engine heats up too much. In all cases, the culprit is usually one of the two IMRC valves.

    Choosing an IMRC valve for Ford Focus, C-Max, Mondeo

    Theoretically, to replace a valve, it is not necessary to buy the original, which costs a crazy 3-4 thousand hryvnia or $100-150 (a pair of valves on one strip). The original Ford valve code is 5243591. There are non-original valves with the same catalog number starting at $20. In addition, valves from Mazda L801-18-741 are excellent; they are three times cheaper and have identical parameters.

    Mazda valve is perfect for Ford engines

    Selecting valve analogues from third-party manufacturers

    There are a number of analogues that are lower in price:

    • HDE 57012001;
    • ATS SEN43591;
    • ERA 556131;
    • Dorman 911-909;
    • BWD IRS106.

    Chinese analogues that are bought out of extreme need:

    • Ruei RU13513FF2;
    • ZZVF ZV13313;
    • Dominant FO52043591 .

    Desperate and economical (or zealous) owners of second-generation Focuses sometimes use EPHH vacuum valves from the VAZ 2105 (does not work from the 2107). The price, of course, is significantly lower and is available in every VAZ spare parts store, but complaints arise about the quality of work. In any case, no one is forcing you to buy an expensive original, although this is the most reliable option and guarantees that the error will be reset immediately after installing the new valve.

    Vacuum valve replacement

    Replacing the valve with your own hands is absolutely easy; to do this, you just need to unscrew the bar with the valves, remove the contact blocks and, having previously marked them, remove the vacuum hoses. After this, you can start replacing. Reviews from owners often suggest that it is better to replace the valves in pairs, although the manufacturer is silent on this matter. After replacement, we reset the error by removing the negative terminal of the battery for 10-15 minutes.

    After reinstalling the terminal and replacing the IMRC valve, the P2008 error will be cleared and normal engine operation will be restored. Good luck with all the repairs and full tanks of good gasoline!

    Is there no OBD2 on FF2? This kind of crap for $7 doesn’t work?

    2 years of fighting against who knows what? > You got an error code, but on my dashboard the message “Engine faulty” and a yellow exclamation mark just lit up. And go understand what it is. At first I strained myself, looked for reasons, tormented various services, but not one admitted what it was. Based on indirect evidence, I decided that it was a glitch in the tidy and gave it a try. I drove like this for two years (the message came on very unpredictably and also disappeared. Some time after replacing the tidy, everything happened again and it became clear that the tidy was not to blame.

    Instead, such a device is poked on an Android phone or Torque tablet - and we have an error code with a description. Yes, 2 years ago they cost $15-17. But now from $5.59 (1 piece, freeshipping, on Ali). I bought this for $7, I don’t have any errors on the device, I plugged it in and looked - it’s boring, everything is fine.

    > And if the official scanners don’t produce results, then what’s the point in poking at an amateurish Android tool?

    This is strange, the “turn off the engine” light is on, but the scanner does not find the error.

    just a second. I have the same stuevina as you. First the system malfunction came on. engine + red lamp. then it lit up for a while. Once again and again the error code p0703 was counted in the service through the connection (+900 rubles) they said the frog brake. Yesterday I went and looked and there were already 2 of them)))

    I didn’t understand how to remove the lower part of the dashboard on the right, but I managed to remove the left one

    The frog, as I understand it, can be removed by hand by turning it to the right.

    I need to look again, but I seem to have one button on the brake, the second on the clutch.

    . what kind of car? Automatic transmission, cruise control?

    My question is this. Throws these errors. P 1260 is not at all in the table that I downloaded on the Internet, 0155 says oxygen sensor heating circuit Bank 2, sensor 1. What is it, where to look for it and how to fix it? Thank you.

    • P1260 - Attempted theft. Launch blocked.

    Gorgeous! Check fuses. Try soldering the instrument panel connector. Look for a specialist (not an error reader!).

    I understand about the shield, thank you. But error P 1260 apparently appeared after the entire instrument panel lit up and indicated that the engine was not working properly. I turned off the engine and tried to start it again. The panel lit up again, the tachometer needle didn’t even twitch, but started up with half a turn. After the third attempt to start the car, the starter no longer rotated. Refused to start. After waiting about a minute, it started up with half a turn and everything was back to normal.

    Could it be that after two attempts, she refused to even turn the starter? Is there some kind of protection if you try to start the car when it is written on the dashboard that the engine is faulty?

    Of course it can block. This is what happened. If everything is back to normal now. Perhaps there is a bad connection on the tidy where the thread is. And there P1260 was registered - an attempted theft. Perhaps there was a power surge. Or, on the contrary, the voltage has dropped, maybe masses somewhere.

    Everything is clear, I will search and check. I don’t yet know what to do with soldering the panel; I don’t yet know how to disassemble and remove the dashboard myself. Of course, the video is available on the Internet, but it’s one thing to watch it, and another to climb it yourself. Thanks for the quick and clear answers
