How to change cabin filters on Nissan X-trail crossovers of different generations

Nissan X-Trail T31 is a popular crossover. Cars of this brand are no longer produced, but to this day they are in demand all over the world. In terms of self-maintenance, they are not too complicated.

Most consumables and spare parts can be replaced with your own hands. For example, changing the cabin filter is not particularly difficult. Having figured out what's what, you can replace this spare part without any problems. Which, of course, will save money that would have to be spent when contacting a service center.

When to change the cabin filter on a Nissan X Trail

In the photo: clogged cabin filter
According to technical documentation and recommendations of experts, the Nissan X Trail cabin filter must be changed every 15 thousand km or every time the car undergoes scheduled maintenance.

There are four main signs that the filter needs to be replaced, or at least have a look at it and find out its condition:

  1. A characteristic smell in the car interior. During operation, the filter collects all the particles “caught” from the air on itself, over time turning into a source of a very characteristic unpleasant odor.
  2. Dust entering the cabin from the air duct. If, when you turn on the car’s ventilation system, a dust cloud begins to flow into the cabin from the air deflectors, it’s definitely time to change the cabin filter. Do not forget that a dirty filter becomes a breeding ground for pathogens and may well turn from a barrier against infections into their active accomplice.
  3. Incorrect operation of the ventilation system. The more the filter becomes clogged during operation, the more difficult it is for air to flow into the cabin. As a result, the ventilation system begins to work intermittently: the air temperature in the cabin rises, in the summer the air conditioner experiences additional load, in the winter the stove may begin to malfunction. Therefore, you should not skimp on replacing the filter - its malfunction can lead to much more serious damage and, accordingly, unplanned repair expenses.
  4. Fogging of glass. If the car windows begin to fog up heavily, this may be a consequence of interruptions in the operation of the air conditioning and ventilation system caused by severe contamination of the filter. Such manifestations are a reason to be concerned about the condition of this part, even if the planned replacement is still far away.

Signs that replacement is needed

If you suddenly find that your heating or air conditioning systems begin to work intermittently, the air flow becomes weaker, or the windows begin to fog up when these devices are operating, or a burning smell appears in the cabin, then one of the reasons may be a clogged cabin filter.

It should be taken into account that the activity and place of operation of the vehicle also plays a big role. For example, if a car is often used in rural areas, the service life of the consumable is reduced. In this case, in order to quickly understand when you need to make a replacement, you need to familiarize yourself with the signs, when they occur, you will determine the right time for the event.

When dust or dirty particles penetrate into the vehicle interior, microelements settle on the upholstery, which affects the life of its use. After the expiration date of the consumable, clean air stops flowing into the cabin, which causes an accumulation of carbon dioxide.

If the car model is equipped with an air conditioning system, then the air that circulates when heating or cooling the cabin goes through the cabin filter. If this element is not operated correctly or is not replaced in a timely manner, the operation of the system is disrupted, which leads to a malfunction.

If you suddenly notice the above signs, replace the consumable immediately!

Important information! When the filter is dirty, all these signs occur simultaneously and are strongly expressed in winter, when the interior is ventilated not through lowered windows, but in the summer through ventilation systems. This situation is unacceptable - situations where a broken filter becomes the result of diseases of the motorist’s respiratory system are not uncommon. Therefore, this part must be replaced frequently.

Instructions for replacing the cabin filter in Nissan X-Trail cars

It’s worth noting right away that replacing the cabin filter (hereinafter referred to as the SF) in Nissan X-Trail SUVs in the T30 and T31 bodies is carried out according to different principles. In addition, these elements are located differently in Nissans with different bodies, so we will consider the process of changing the SF separately.

Cabin filter for Nissan X-Trail T31 and T30

As stated in the vehicle operating instructions from the manufacturer, this component of the interior cleaning system should be replaced every 60 thousand km or once every 4 years. However, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of each region where the machine is operated. For example, in more polluted cities or villages where the dustiness of roads is quite high, this element must be replaced every 30 thousand km.

New SF for Nissan X-Trail

In the original English-language instructions from the manufacturer, this factor is about. In turn, the Russian manual says that it is advisable to replace the interior element twice a year or every 30 thousand kilometers.

So, if you decide to replace the SF in your car yourself, then first of all you need to purchase the element itself. The original filter number from the manufacturer is 27277-EN025. It is recommended to buy only original products, since by buying counterfeit products, you expose your car to breakdowns. Moreover, the “Japanese” themselves are sensitive to counterfeit auto parts.

Tools

Before proceeding with the direct replacement of the SF, you should prepare in advance:

  • slotted screwdriver;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • new filter element.

Step-by-step instruction

Even the most inexperienced driver can replace the element at home. To do this, just follow the steps described below.

  1. First of all, you need to remove everything from the glove compartment.
  2. Having released it, in the corners you will see the axles on which the glove compartment is attached. They need to be turned towards themselves and using a slotted screwdriver you need to pry them off and then remove them from the corners. You can see what the axles look like when dismantled in the photo below.

Glovebox axles X-Trail T30

Then you need to remove the glove compartment. Having done this, you will see another plastic element that needs to be removed by unscrewing 6 screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Next, slightly raise the upper glove compartment. You will see a plate that can also be dismantled or simply bent, and then pulled out this part from below. We do this carefully. After completing these steps, the part will hang on the wires - this is how it should be.

Detail of the glove compartment on the wires

The cover of the filter element opens to your view. It must be dismantled by first removing the wire stretched across the cover. We remove the old SF, in its place we put a new one, observing the correct position (the arrow of the component should be directed upward). Next, everything needs to be assembled in reverse order.

Step-by-step instruction

The official Nissan manufacturer provides a way to replace the element by removing the gas pedal. This method is more complex, so we will consider another method, less “hemorrhoids”. Moreover, this does not require a tool, but only level hands and a sober head.

First you need to pry off the plastic pad located near the gas pedal with your hand.

Carefully pull it towards you to remove it from the plastic latches. We do this carefully, since the fastenings of the lining are very fragile. Now you will see the filter component cover. Pay attention to the heater radiator - if the car has been used before, it may be hot

Be careful not to get burned.

SF cover in X-Trail T31

Now you need to dismantle the SF cover - pull it towards the gas pedal. Having removed the cover, then, using its lower flat part or a screwdriver, you need to pry up the SF itself and pull it out.

Dismantling of SF in X-Trail T31

Since we decided not to dismantle the gas pedal, installing a new SF without bending it is simply impossible. Therefore, the element needs to be bent into a butterfly shape. Once you put it in place, it will straighten itself. So, we insert the SF into the connector, while pressing the gas pedal with one hand (otherwise it won’t work). We put back the plastic panel. At this point, the replacement of the element can be considered complete.

Replacing the cabin filter for T30

First you need to empty the glove box of everything that is in it. This is the only way to see the two axles, which are the glove compartment mounts.

  • Turn both of these levers towards you
  • Using a flat-head screwdriver, pry them up and pull them out of the grooves.
  • Remove the glove compartment lid and prepare a Phillips screwdriver
  • On the opened panel, unscrew 6 screws
  • Remove the plastic cover - you will have full access to the housing plug - the seat where you will need to place the new filter
  • Open this cover by prying the two plastic latches (marked PUSH)
  • Carefully remove the old consumables, clean the inside of the case (with a vacuum cleaner)
  • Replace by installing a new one.

Assembly is carried out in the reverse order, there should be no unnecessary parts left; only two axles were removed at the very beginning of disassembling the glove compartment and the cover of the air-cleaning element housing.

Which filter to choose for replacement

The original Nissan cabin filter 27277-4BA0A is installed from the factory. The cost of the filter is from 600 rubles. Also, in addition to the original one, you can purchase analogue filters at cheaper prices, but of quite good quality.

When choosing a cabin filter, you should pay attention to its type: regular or carbon. It is believed that coal filters incoming air better, but its price is higher

Some of the motorists installing carbon filters did not notice much of a difference.

  • Filtron K 1330 from 400 RUR
  • Goodwill AG441CF from 300 rub.
  • Nevsky Filter NF6118 from 130 RUR
  • Sakura CA18361 from 300 RUR
  • MANN CU 25012 from 700 RUR

The above filters are excellent replacements for the original, but these are not all analogues offered for the X-trail T32.

Filter dimensions length 180 width 250 height 35

If you notice that the air conditioner or heater has begun to work worse, the flow of incoming air has become weaker. Or your car windows begin to fog up when the heater or air conditioner is running; one of the reasons may be a clogged cabin filter.

How to choose a cabin filter for Nissan x Trail?

When choosing a salon cleaner, there are two options: anti-dust cleaners and cleaners with a carbon layer. Due to this very layer, angles are able to capture unpleasant odors, retain toxic substances and convert ozone into oxygen. Naturally, such filters cost an order of magnitude more.

It is worth noting that their service life, despite all the manufacturers’ statements, does not differ from the life of conventional dust cleaners. However, if you suffer from allergic reactions or can't stand the smell of exhaust fumes, you should definitely consider buying them.

Cabin filter location

The cabin filter in the Nissan X Trail T30 is located behind the glove compartment. It is located directly in the path of the air flow coming from the environment into the vehicle.

In order to see the filter, you need to remove the glove compartment and the panel behind it. Only after this can you look at the place where the cabin air purifier is located.

Also, the maintenance regulations for the T32 generation Nissan X-Trail recommend replacing the washer on the drain plug (part number 1102601M02).

Each time during maintenance you should check:

  • operation of cooling system components, including hoses;
  • antifreeze level;
  • exhaust pipe;
  • fuel hoses;
  • both suspensions (both front and rear);
  • fastening the body to the chassis;
  • tire pressure level and general condition of the rubber;
  • wheel placement angles;
  • steering play;
  • steering, including power steering;
  • condition of brake pads;
  • vacuum booster;
  • brake fluid level and condition;
  • drive unit;
  • battery charge;
  • spark plug;
  • headlight brightness.

Replacing the cabin filter in Nissan X-Trail T30, T31, T32

Do the windows fog up in humid weather or does the interior have an unpleasant odor? It's time to change the cabin filter. It is designed to clean air flows entering the car interior. It is part of the vehicle cleaning system necessary for:

  • removing dust from air coming from outside;
  • protection from exhaust gases and combustion products.

Thus, it provides the driver and passengers with clean, breathable air.

How often do you change the cabin filter in a Nissan X-Trail?

We recommend carrying out the replacement procedure as part of standard maintenance every 15,000 km, or 2 times a year.

Considering that the process is quite simple and does not require special skills and knowledge, almost any machine owner can independently replace the filter element. Thus, you will save money and time on a trip to the technical center.

Everything you need for repairs

  • Buy your own cabin air filter. It is advisable to give preference to the original Nissan X-Trail to avoid operational problems. Catalog number 27277-EN025, 27277-4BA0A (for T32).
  • Screwdrivers (slotted, Phillips).

Changing the filter on T30 (first generation)

  • Empty the glove compartment (glove compartment).
  • Feel for the axes on which it is attached (located on the sides of the structure). Turn them towards you, and, using a slotted screwdriver, unfasten them from the corners and remove them.
  • Having removed the structure, you can find a plastic part secured with six self-tapping screws. They must be unscrewed using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Having slightly raised the upper edge of the glove compartment, you should bend the plate located on top so that it hangs on the wires.
  • Having removed the wire stretched through the SF cover, we completely remove the filter element.
  • Install the new part, making sure the arrow points upward.
  • In reverse order, return everything to its place.

Changing the filter on T31 (second generation)

In technical centers, technicians use a technique that involves removing the gas pedal. It’s better to use a less complicated method on your own.

Use your hand to pry and pull the plastic cover next to the gas pedal towards you, removing it

Attention, the part is extremely fragile, manipulations must be performed with extreme care

  • Holding the gas pedal with your hand, insert the filter into the connector.
  • Reinstall the trim.

Changing the filter to T32 (third generation)

The part is located under the glove compartment. Therefore, the first part of the manipulations is similar to the T30 generation.

Since the location of the glove box in the third generation Nissan X-Trail is not the most convenient for manipulation, the installation will be similar to the T31, i.e., folding the SF with a butterfly and then automatically straightening it.

How to properly replace the cabin filter?

In the Nissan X Trail T31, replacing the cabin filter is a simple procedure, for which there are no safety precautions. Before carrying out work, turn off the air conditioning and turn off the engine. To replace, you will need a slotted screwdriver, a vacuum cleaner and half an hour of free time. The procedure itself takes place in two stages, described below.

Stage one

  1. We dismantle the side trim in the area of the driver's right leg. To do this, you need to press the latches of the plastic plates.

  2. Remove the interior cleaner cover by prying it off with a screwdriver. It is located to the right of the pedals.

  3. Remove the cabin filter from the heater housing. To do this, you need to squeeze its upper and lower corners.

Stage two

  1. We vacuum, blow or wipe the filter well.
  2. We insert a new interior cleaner, after squeezing its edges. Pay attention to the inscription on the filter. The inscription “Ari Flow” indicates that the filter should be installed against the movement of the machine.

  3. We put the cover back in place.
  4. We install the casing. When installing, make sure that all grooves fit into the special brackets and the latches are closed.

At this point, the procedure for replacing the cabin filter on a Nissan X Trail T31 can be considered complete.

T30

The first generation of the Japanese crossover, called the X-Trail, was developed back in 2000. After 3 years, restyling was carried out, but no changes occurred in relation to the location or design of the cabin filter. Therefore, the instructions in question will be relevant for the pre-restyling and restyled versions of the T30. The procedure begins with selecting the consumable itself, as well as determining the frequency of replacement. In general, motorists recommend starting from the condition of the element, but at the same time changing it at least once a year or maximum every 20 thousand kilometers.

Although it is often recommended to replace the cabin filter on a Nissan X-Trail in the T30 body no later than after 15 thousand kilometers. Otherwise, the old filter element no longer copes with the assigned tasks, and begins to work more to the detriment than to the benefit of the driver and his passengers. Dense city traffic, driving on dusty and dirty roads makes it necessary to shorten the recommended maintenance interval for the cabin filter. As for the consumables themselves, the choice here is between original and non-original spare parts. In the first case, the consumable can be found by catalog number B727A79925. But you can also take analogues produced by the following well-established companies:

  • Filtron.
  • Mann.
  • Sakura.
  • Mayle.
  • Nevsky, etc.

Analogues are somewhat cheaper, although they are not much inferior in terms of efficiency. Here the choice is directly up to the car owner of the X-Trail crossover, whoever is more comfortable.

The developers of the first generation did not come up with anything complicated, and chose a completely standard and easily accessible location for the cabin filter. You can find it behind the glove compartment, that is, behind everyone’s favorite glove compartment. The procedure itself looks like this:

Prepare a minimum set of tools and materials. This includes a regular Phillips and flathead screwdriver, a new filter, and a flashlight for better visibility during the replacement process. Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible for easier access to the filter element. Now open the glove compartment. It is better to remove everything unnecessary from the glove compartment. At the corners of the glove compartment there are small plastic clips. These clips should be removed. They are dismantled manually. They just need to be carefully pulled out. If you can’t do this manually, use a flat-head screwdriver to help yourself by prying up the edges of the clip. After removing the glove box fastenings, the glove compartment can be safely removed and put aside. We don't need him yet. Behind the glove compartment there is another plastic element that acts as a fence. The plastic is held in place with 6 self-tapping screws. Therefore, prepare a Phillips screwdriver and start unscrewing the fasteners one by one. Place them carefully in one place so as not to lose them when reassembling. Remove the partition and put it aside. That's it, now in front of you is the filter housing of the first generation X-Trail crossover. The lid itself is held in place simply by 2 latches. They are removed manually and the cover is removed. Only if you change the filter in winter, when it is very cold in the cabin, then you need to remove the fasteners extremely carefully. Not the highest quality plastic is used here. Because of this, at low temperatures the material becomes extremely brittle.

The latches and the lid itself can be easily broken.

Having opened the cover that blocks access to the cabin filter of the first generation Japanese crossover, pay attention to the location of the arrows on the consumable body. They should look down, that is, at the front passenger's feet

The new consumable should be placed in the same way. Carefully remove the old filter and clean the seat using a dry rag or vacuum cleaner. If desired, you can blow out the nest with compressed air under low pressure. Insert the new filter so that the arrows on the consumable housing are pointing down. These indicators show how outside air should flow through the element. Reassemble everything in reverse order.

If we talk about the first generation of the X-Trail crossover, then replacing the cabin air filter is a simple task. Many cars have a similar arrangement. In fact, you only need to snap off a few clamps and unscrew 6 screws, and then screw everything into place. The work is considered complete when you return the glove compartment to its rightful place. Considering the simplicity of the task, replacing the cabin filter on Nissan X-Trail T30 cars in most cases is carried out independently by the car owners themselves.

Replacement frequency

It is recommended to change the cabin filter on the Nissan X-Trail at every scheduled technical inspection, or every 15 thousand kilometers. However, in fact, it is necessary to focus, first of all, not on dry numbers, but on operating conditions.

The quality of the air that the driver and passengers breathe directly depends on the condition of the cabin filter. And if the structure has fallen into disrepair, it is not able to cope with the tasks assigned to it.

In addition to the fact that it will not be able to purify the air, it will also become a favorable place for the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Factors that affect the wear of the cabin filter:

  1. The filter lasts the longest in small towns with asphalt pavement. If it is a large city with a lot of traffic or, conversely, a small city with dusty dirt roads, the filter will need to be changed more often.
  2. In the warm season, protective materials deteriorate faster than in the cold season. Again due to dusty roads.
  3. The more time the car is used, the more often the filter will have to be changed.

Many motorists and service center technicians recommend replacing them once a year, at the end of autumn. When it got colder, the road surface cooled down and there was much less dust.

Modern filters are made of synthetic materials that are good at retaining micro-particles of dust. They are also additionally treated with an antibacterial compound to prevent the development of diseases.

Replacement instructions

The cabin filter in the X-Trail 31 is located on the driver's side of the seat, at the feet. Replacement is carried out in several steps:

Find the cabin filter to the right of the gas pedal. It is closed with an oblong rectangular black plastic cover. The cover is secured with two latches - top and bottom. No bolts.

For convenience, you can remove the plastic casing on the right, which is located in the place marked by the arrow. But you don’t have to take it off. It does not create any special obstacles.

But the gas pedal can get in the way. If you can’t get it into the right place to remove or install the filter, then it will have to be dismantled. It is secured with the bolts marked in the picture. However, if you have some experience and manual dexterity, the pedal will not become an obstacle. We change the filter without removing the gas pedal. The plastic cover covering the filter must be squeezed out and pryed off from below with a regular flat-head screwdriver. She gives in easily. Pull towards yourself and the lower part will come out of its socket. Then all that remains is to snap off the top one and remove the cover completely.

Press down on the middle of the old filter, then its corners will appear outward. Grasp the corner and gently pull it towards you. Pull out the entire filter.

An old filter is usually darkened, dirty, clogged with dust and all sorts of debris. The photo below shows the contrast between the old and new filter.

Then you should unpack the new filter. It can be regular or carbon, with additional filling for better air filtration. It is gray in color even when new. The photo below shows a carbon filter. You can also clean the filter seat - blow it with a compressor and remove visible dust. Then carefully insert the new filter into the seat. To do this, you will have to slightly crumple it. Modern synthetic materials from which such filters are made are quite flexible and plastic, and quickly return to their previous shape.

However, it is also important not to overdo it here. Bending is necessary only at the initial stage in order to insert the structure into the seat.

It is also important to consider the location of the filter

On its end side there are arrows that show the right direction. It is necessary to install the filter so that the arrows point inside the cabin.

Place the entire filter into the seat, carefully straighten it so that it takes the correct position. There should be no kinks, bends, protruding sides or gaps.

Once the filter is in place, snap the lid and, if something was dismantled, put these parts back in place. Remove dust that spilled onto the floor during work.

Work order.

The part we need is located behind the car panel, behind the protective cover. Or more precisely, behind the pedal assembly, on the driver’s side. To change the old part, you need to remove the casing. It is secured with two latches. To remove the casing, you do not need a special tool; just pry it off with a flat-head screwdriver and pull it towards you.

Then you will need to remove the electronic gas pedal. It is held on by three bolts, which can be unscrewed with a 10mm wrench. The connector does not need to be disconnected, just move it to the side. If you don’t have a screwdriver at hand, you can press hard on the middle of the cover so that you can grab the bottom corner and pull it out of the groove.

After this, we take out the old part. If possible, it is better to vacuum the installation area, or at least wipe it with a rag, since a significant amount of debris and dust may remain in the niche, which will clog a significant part of the new filter.

Now you can proceed to installing the new part. You need to carefully look at the arrows indicating the direction of air flow. To place the filter in the groove, you will have to deform it slightly, folding it like a butterfly. But don’t worry, it will straighten out immediately after installation.

What you will need

Replacing the filter on the Ixtrail T32 yourself is not difficult even for beginners. The simplicity is explained by where this filter is located. It is located on the passenger side, behind the glove compartment.

On some cars you almost have to disassemble the body and tinker with the pedals. For example, how in T31 the gas pedal interferes with replacement. Here, in order to get to the filter, you don’t have to remove anything. The filter is closed with a lid, which is attached to a latch and a bolt.

Therefore, the only tool you need to change the filter yourself is a Torx t20 wrench.

And the only consumable that is required is the new filter itself. The original one produced by Nissan has article number 272774BA0A.

The following options are also suitable instead:

  • Filtron (article K 1330);
  • Goodwill (item AG441CF);
  • Nevsky Filter (article NF6118);
  • Sakura (item CA18361);
  • MANN (item CU 25012).

But these are not the only possible options. The cabin filter is the kind of thing that can easily be replaced by any other manufacturer if the sizes match. The dimensions of the hero of this review are: length 180, width 250, height 35 mm.

There are also suitable both regular and carbon options from many manufacturers. Coal ones are more efficient, perfectly retain even the smallest harmful particles and perfectly filter the air. But they also cost a little more, of course.

If all the driving takes place on clean asphalt with a small number of other cars, then a regular one will do. In winter, the air is also much cleaner and there is less dust.

Choosing a cabin filter for the Nissan X-Trail T31

By default, Nissan-X-Trail-T31 is equipped with an original filter with Nissan catalog number 27277EN025. In modifications, carbon filler is often found, catalog item 27277EN187.

When choosing, give preference to original components with factory part numbers. However, the inflated cost is not always affordable for the car owner. Many people prefer to buy high-quality analogues.

Among the many brands, the most popular are: MANN FILTER, MAHLE, DENSO, VALEO, PURFLUX and a number of others. The price of analogues is 25 - 35% lower than the originals. The driver independently chooses which type of cleaner to purchase. If you experience difficulties, always consult with service station specialists.

T32

The X-Trail in the T32 body first appeared in public as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012. A year later, in the fall of 2013, production of the serial version of the crossover began. Despite the fact that the new look has ceased to be as brutal as its predecessors, and cross-country ability has decreased significantly, the T32 is in great demand among fans of high-quality urban crossovers made in a modern stylish design. It is worth separately praising the engineers who corrected their own mistakes or the mistakes of their predecessors, this time choosing a normal place to install the cabin filter. It is recommended to change the consumables itself every 15 thousand kilometers or at every scheduled maintenance. But no one is stopping you from changing it more often, since the new filter provides fresher and cleaner air in the cabin. Plus, if the filter element is heavily worn, it will interfere with the efficiency of the heater and air conditioner. If you need an original element, it can be found by catalog number 272774BA0A. This is exactly the filter that is installed on the X Trail T32 from the factory. It costs from 600 rubles.

  • Filtron K.
  • Mann.
  • Nevsky.
  • Goodwill.
  • Sakura.
  • Mayle etc.

These and many other manufacturers have in their catalogs filter models designed for the Nissan X-Trail in the T32 body. They cost from 150 rubles and above. There are even filters whose price exceeds the cost of the original consumable. For reference, we can add that the filter suitable for the mounting socket on the T32 has dimensions of 180x250x35 mm. The manufacturer apparently took into account the errors of T31, returning the cabin filter again to the glove compartment area at the feet of the front passenger. You should look for the housing not behind the glove compartment, but under it. To change the consumables yourself, take a flashlight and a size 20 Torx wrench and free up about 30 minutes of your time.

  • Move to the front passenger seat area, for convenience, move it as far back as possible.
  • There is no need to remove the glove compartment itself. You need to get under it. This is where the cover is located that blocks access to the filter.
  • To remove the cover you only need to unscrew 1 bolt. This is where you will need a size 20 Torx wrench.
  • Manually press the latches to remove the housing cover and pull it out.
  • Now in front of you is the filter itself. You need to remove it and try to clear the nest of accumulated debris. If the filter has not been changed for a long time, a large amount of dirt and dust will likely fall onto the floor when removed. It is not worth installing a new filter in such a dirty seat.
  • Insert the new filter, following the arrows on the housing.
  • Replace the cover.

This completes the work. Everything here is extremely simple and clear. Yes, you have to bend over a little to stick your head in and see the cabin filter housing under the glove compartment on the X-Trail in the T32 body. But this causes some difficulties only the first time. In the future, many car owners manage to complete the procedure almost by touch. The situation with different generations of X-Trail crossovers from Nissan is really different. If the 1st and 2nd generations do not provide for any special difficulties, then on the T31 body for some reason the engineers did not take into account some points and chose not the most convenient place to place the cabin filter. It is possible that this was done to facilitate access to other nodes, but this does not make it any easier for T31 owners. Regardless of which X-Trail you have at your disposal, it is more than possible to change the cabin filter on your crossover yourself. Choose high-quality consumables and change filter elements in a timely manner.

It’s hard to say what the designers were starting from and what the engineers were thinking about when they changed the cabin air filtration system on the second generation Nissan X-Trail. It’s difficult to understand why it was necessary to change the completely successful and convenient location of this consumable. But the owners of the X-Trail in the T31 body have no choice but to come to terms with this reality and solve problems as they arise. Some people get out of the situation by contacting a car service center, where specialists take care of changing the cabin filter on the Nissan X-Trail T31. This is a waste of money that can be saved and spent on more important and complex work.

It is also interesting that in the operating manual and service regulations for the Russian market, Nissan cites some strange, in the opinion of many motorists, numbers. After all, they advise changing the cabin filter after 30 thousand kilometers. And this supposedly takes into account more difficult operating conditions than in Europe, where, according to the regulations, replacement is carried out only at every 4 scheduled maintenance. In reality, things are different. Even an original high-quality filter from Nissan in Russian conditions can lose its effectiveness after 15-20 thousand kilometers. Some even change consumables after 7-10 thousand km, or 2 times a year. The next pressing issue regarding replacing the cabin filter on a Japanese crossover from Nissan in the T31 body is the choice of the consumable itself. Moreover, some X-Trail owners do not know which of the original filters is better for them to take, since there are catalog numbers 27277 EN000 and 27277 EN025.

We reveal a secret that is not a secret at all, but rather another strange decision on the part of the manufacturer. The original cabin filter for T31 was produced for many years, and for some reason it had different catalog numbers in different years. Although in reality it was the same consumable. There is absolutely no difference between the products with the indicated numbers. The cost of the original is relatively low, therefore, in the case of replacing cabin filters on a Nissan X Trail in the T31 body, there is no urgent need to look for more affordable analogues. If you cannot purchase the original for one reason or another, you can look for an alternative consumable among the products of the following brands:

  • Nevsky filter.
  • Filtron K.
  • Sakura.
  • Delphi.
  • TSN, etc.

The only recommendation would be to buy a carbon filter, and not a regular paper one. It copes much more effectively not only with mechanical cleaning, but also eliminates odors in the cabin during frequent driving in city traffic jams, smog and smoke.

If you have purchased a suitable filter element for cleaning cabin air in your Japanese crossover X-Trail T31, you can proceed directly to replacement. The procedure is noticeably more complicated and in many ways more inconvenient than that of its predecessor T30. But if you want to save on car service services, you will have to be patient.

  • To replace, you will need a standard set of screwdrivers, a new filter and a small LED flashlight. Here you will need a good and compact light source so that the massive lamp does not interfere with you.
  • If we go by the factory recommendations, then everything is very scary and not all T31 car owners decide to do such work. This is due to one replacement point, which requires removing the gas pedal. In fact, you can do without this step, so feel free to take on the work yourself.
  • It is better to work when the engine is cool, when the heater has not been turned on for a long time. Otherwise, there is a risk of getting burns from hot pipes.
  • Before dismantling work, be sure to set the desired position of the climate control damper. You should turn the knob until the maximum hot air blows on the glass. This way the flap will go all the way down. And when you remove the gearmotor, the correct position of the gears will not be lost.
  • To gain access to the consumable, you need to remove the plastic cover. You will find it near the driver's right foot. There are latches on the top and back of the cover. The plastic here is also not of the best quality, and at low temperatures it is easy to break. Therefore, it is better to work in a warm garage, or preheat the interior using a stove.

  • By removing the plastic cover, you have a view of the stove radiator. There may be hot pipes here, so be extremely careful. The stove body is located right there.
  • In the back of the case there is a cover that blocks access to our cabin filter. Only the gear motor prevents you from getting to it.
  • The gearmotor is removed from the connector, the fasteners are unscrewed and the device is moved to the side for now.
  • The filter cover is lifted at the bottom and snaps off. It is simply held on by clamps.

  • Remove the old consumable from its seat. Here it is better to take a vacuum cleaner and thoroughly walk through the entire filter landing cavity.
  • If there is an unpleasant and musty smell in the car, at this stage it is recommended to treat the air conditioner evaporator with a special cleaner. For such purposes, antiseptic sprays are provided, sold in any automotive chemical store.
  • When pulling out the old filter, do not be afraid that you will touch it against the gas pedal sensor. Anyway, he has done his job and will go in the trash.
  • When installing a new filter, this sensor becomes a certain obstacle. To get by, you will have to fold the new element in the shape of a butterfly, holding it with your hand in the center.
  • Now bring one edge inside the seat, then bend it a little more at the point of compression so as not to touch the gas pedal.
  • If about 70%!f(MISSING)filter has already entered, you can open the butterfly. The elasticity of the material allows it to actually straighten out on its own. You just need to push the element a little and completely seat it in the socket.

At the final stage, the cover is installed, the gear motor is returned to its place and the plastic cover is closed. As you can clearly see, in the case of T31, the procedure is noticeably more complex and delicate. But you can deal with it yourself.

Typical faults of the Nissan X-Trail

  • Some models do not have a window washer level indicator. For example, this is often associated with the repair of the Nissan X-Trail T31: since it is possible to determine that the liquid has run out only in a practical way, the pump may fail, often running idle.
  • Failure of the fifth door stops.
  • Relatively short resource of steering and variator.
  • Abrasion of wiring and cables. Let’s say, if we take the repair of the Nissan X-Trail T31 as an example, we can note that in it these elements are located on the steering wheel and are therefore subject to wear.
  • Malfunctions in the exhaust gas catalyst. As a rule, the reason for them is the use of low-quality fuel.
  • As with many other cars, one of the most common parts that fail is the spark plugs.
  • Possible inaccuracy of sensors. This problem has always been noted by motorists who prefer the Nissan brand: the readings are often incorrect, however, this problem is easily eliminated by replacing or cleaning clogged or oxidized elements.
  • Overbought cars are often characterized by squeaking of plastic parts in the interior. This is a small omission, but sometimes it prevents us from identifying more serious breakdowns with the same “symptoms”.
  • In the cabin, most often complaints concerned the glass seals and burnt-out light bulbs.

As you can see, in principle, there are no serious violations - everything is completely solvable if the diagnosis and repair of the Nissan X-Trail is carried out on time. You should not be afraid of high costs - despite the fact that many official service points have amazing prices for “original” spare parts, specialized workshops that are more resourceful in this regard can easily solve this problem by using analogues and buying original parts. In a word, if you pay close attention to your car, the Nissan X-Trail will not cause you any problems.
