Which clutch kit to choose for Lada Samara?
For anyone who has decided to start changing the clutch on their own, having already had experience in purchasing a kit for a Lada 2107 , it is unnecessary to give any advice. A novice motorist probably shouldn’t take on such a task, but experienced VAZ drivers usually have an established opinion on this matter. However, the supply of information can unexpectedly fail even an experienced car enthusiast, because technology does not stand still. Therefore, information based on research results and the experience of domestic car enthusiasts will come in handy.
Briefly about the Lada Samara torque transmission system
Before discussing which clutch is better on the VAZ 2114, it would be useful to consider the design features of the friction mechanism. The designers decided to abandon the classic hydraulic drive circuit for controlling the release fork, and developed a mechanical type drive based on a cable for front-wheel drive cars. Constructive nuances can be expressed in the following points:
- A single-disc dry clutch is a permanently closed type device.
- The shutdown process involves a diaphragm pressure spring.
- The driven disk is equipped with a torsional vibration damper.
- Cable clutch drive without gaps between the pressure spring petals and the bearing.
The Samara model is equipped with a clutch with a diameter of 190 mm (2109-1601085), Samara 2 has a clutch with a diameter of 200 mm (2110-1601085). New designs have softer dampers, which makes it possible to effectively smooth out uneven crankshaft rotation not only at idle, but also during load and engine braking. The owner can only determine which clutch is best to install on the VAZ 2114, and choose a high-quality kit from the mass of offers.
Subject to compliance with the operating rules, some copies work out their service life of up to 100-150 thousand km. If previously car owners preferred to buy exactly those clutch parts that had failed, in recent years there has been a change in priorities towards the purchase of kits. This is due to the increasing qualifications of our drivers; many have realized that comprehensive repairs are much more profitable financially.
Release bearing and driven disc
This is another element of the clutch mechanism. With its help, force is transferred from the fork installed in the crankcase to the petals of the basket. The fork is driven by a cable from the pedal. The driven disk is installed inside the basket and connected to the input shaft using splines. It has friction linings installed on it. Its service life may vary depending on how you drive the car. That's all, there are not very many elements, and if the clutch is being replaced, it is best to install everything new. You should not change only the driven disk, as many do. Replacing the clutch with a kit seems much more effective. Moreover, after this, the VAZ 2114 clutch must be adjusted.
Practice: which clutch is better to buy for a VAZ 2114 car and how to determine it?
When evaluating a friction clutch and its components, the experience of friends and acquaintances who have purchased them at least once is very useful. For example, a novice car enthusiast who decides to independently replace the clutch on a VAZ 2110 will certainly be helped by the recommendations of experienced motorists.
As practice shows, when purchasing a clutch kit, the owner is mainly concerned about the issue of fakes and defects. Therefore, let’s look at some interesting points separately.
Package
What do we immediately pay attention to when making any purchase? That's right, on the packaging. The same pattern applies here. The box itself and its quality are not evidence of a fake, but still two points should be paid attention to:
- No self-respecting manufacturer will package their products in a flimsy box with crooked text and errors.
- If the letters on the package are erased by the touch of a finger, then feel free to put it back and leave this store.
If we like the box, then we move on.
Clutch disc
Thinking about the question of which clutch is best to buy for a VAZ 2114, we slowly take the disc out of the box. We evaluate the geometry of the product; the disc must be smooth, without any teeth, chips or other defects.
We inspect the damper springs - from a good manufacturer they are always painted with clear varnish or some color. The craftsmen point out that they have not yet encountered original clutches that are unpainted. By the way, many companies themselves recommend this method of identifying counterfeits.
Release bearing
If the kit includes a plastic bearing, you can put the box aside or then replace it with a standard VAZ metal bearing. During active driving, the plastic part begins to “howl” and then crumbles. Attempts to solve the problem by “immersing” the bearing in lubricant solve the problem only for a short time.
Basket
If even one petal protrudes, the car will twitch and the pedal will constantly vibrate. Any deviations are unacceptable; if there are any, we immediately refuse the purchase.
How to choose a clutch for a VAZ 2109
A car’s clutch, if it is of high quality, can serve without fail for a fairly long period of time, up to 150,000 km. So such a procedure as replacing the clutch may not catch you. But if the car's mileage is over 100,000 km, or there are signs of clutch failure, it's time to think about replacing it.
But before you go to the store for a new spare part, it is advisable to decide which clutch is suitable, and what exactly you should pay attention to when choosing this unit.
There are many modifications of clutches for VAZs, so you should pay attention to choosing the clutch that is suitable for your car.
Two tables will help you with this:
Driven clutch disc (VAZ)
Clutch pressure plate, or basket (VAZ)
- Briefly about the signs of a faulty clutch:
- — the clutch slips (the speed increases, but the car does not accelerate); — the clutch does not disengage completely (the clutch is moving);
- — noises and knocking when the clutch is engaged/disengaged.
- If one of the signs of malfunction occurs, a simple clutch adjustment can help, but if that doesn’t help, it’s time to look into choosing a new clutch for your VAZ.
- So, what should you pay attention to when choosing a unit such as a clutch?
- Driven disk.
The friction surfaces of the friction linings of the driven disk must be homogeneous in composition. It should not be very rough, there should be no cracks, chips, burrs or other similar defects. There should be no oil stains or traces of other liquids on them. These requirements can only be met by a serious manufacturer of spare parts.
Let's pay attention to the rivets of the friction plates and damper plates, they should look the same. There should be no displacement relative to each other and no play of the damper plates and friction linings. Damper springs should also have no play. The splines inside the hub should look neat and free of burrs and cracks.
Often, serious manufacturers put their markings on the damper plate; pay attention to its content and quality of application, this will protect you from purchasing counterfeits.
Pressure disk.
It is necessary to pay attention to the quality of the riveted connections of the plates around the perimeter of the basket. If the rivets look sloppy, asymmetrical and different from each other, you should think about whether to buy such a spare part. The presence of chips and cracks is also unacceptable. The clutch cover skirt is usually made by stamping, so there should be no burrs, scratches or burrs on it.
The clutch pressure plate itself, located in the basket, should not contain even the slightest microcracks or cavities on the mirror.
Now at VAZ they are installing new generation clutches on cars. It features softer operation and reduced noise compared to the old-style clutch.
The upgraded clutch disc 11183-1601130 with a diameter of 190 mm is intended for installation on VAZ 2109 (as well as -08, -099, 2114 - 2115) Lada Samara engines, clutch discs 11186-1601130 and 11193-1601130 with a diameter of 200 mm - on other VAZ models.
The most common brands of clutches for the VAZ 2109 and other VAZs are Valeo (France), LUK (Germany), Kraft (Germany), Hola (Netherlands), Sachs (Germany), VazInterService (Russia, official supplier).

Driving style and clutch: choosing a set
Still haven't figured out what to buy to replace the coupling? Let's look at one more aspect - driving style, because each of us prefers to move in a manner unique to him. Conventionally, we divide the number of driving styles by four. Based on reviews and operational experience, we will try to create sets of companies that would correspond to a particular driving style. Thus, we will try to answer the question, which clutch is best installed on the VAZ 2114 and why.
Calm style
This driving style provides low revs, smooth shifting and the same acceleration. Products from the following brands are suitable here:
- Luk is a reliable kit that provides smooth and comfortable shifting without jerking.
- Valeo is a comfortable kit, it shows its best sides in traffic jams, there is a good reserve of torque.
Standard style
- KraftTech is a fairly comfortable set with an average service life.
- Sachs is a moderately tight clutch for such driving with a good reserve of torque, allowing you to ride in both an active and relaxed manner.
- VIS is a domestic product of good quality, but is sensitive to clutch control experience.
Dynamic style
Involves rapid acceleration and sharp gear changes with constant clutch throwing, which operates at high speeds most of the time. In this case, the following kits are suitable:
- Pilenga – use the kit not with metal ceramics. The stiffest clutch, in order to avoid jerking, you have to raise the speed and quickly release the clutch.
- Sachs is the best kit for this type of riding, moderately tight with minimal jerking.
Sport style
Based on the use of maximum acceleration, as well as sharp gear changes and regular clutch drop. As in the previous style, to the question of which clutch is best to install on a VAZ 2114 car, the answer will be to use the following kits:
- Pilenga - without ceramics! As mentioned, the clutch is stiff, resulting in a stiff pedal. However, in the end the driver gets instant traction.
- Sachs - according to many, the best choice for such riding, moderately tight with a good service life.
Most car enthusiasts choose the Sachs kit, but change the release bearing to a VAZ one, considering this option to be optimal for all cases. The recommendations are not binding and are the result of processing many opinions and reviews from our motorists.

When to change and how to check the clutch - its service life may have come to an end
Good day, dear car enthusiasts! Each of us is always concerned about how long this or that part or car system will last. It `s naturally. Especially considering the quality of some products, the “skills” of workers, etc.
This issue fully concerns the car’s clutch. Very often on motorist forums there is a serious question about when to change the clutch, and how to know when the time has come to replace it. So let’s try to figure out together what the actual service life of the clutch is, and whether it exists at all.
Is there a certain clutch resource?
How to replace the clutch in a VAZ-2110
Will you be upset or not when you find out that the manufacturer does not indicate specific figures for the service life of the clutch. If, for example, in the brake system, it is clearly stated that the thickness of the brake disc should be such and such, then why is this not applicable to the clutch?
The fact is that clutch wear depends on many reasons, and first of all, of course, on how the driver changes gears and in what mode the clutch is used.
And while clutch disc thickness cannot be measured the same way brake disc thickness can be measured with a caliper, there are ways to measure it. There are two of them.
- The first way to measure the thickness of the clutch disc is with a special measuring gauge. This method does not require dismantling the clutch; it is performed on a lift. But you are unlikely to use it.
- the second method is simpler to implement and allows you to determine the wear of the clutch disc in order to replace it. Replacing the driven disk is a procedure provided by the manufacturer, because The driven disk is a consumable part. The check is carried out as follows: with the engine running, you need to put it in high gear, accelerate it, and if the car does not stall, this means that the driven disk is worn out and requires replacement. It must be remembered that such a check of the thickness of the clutch disc is not technologically correct, but it is effective and allows you to determine the condition of the disc extremely accurately.
We find out which clutch is better to use on the VAZ 2114
Before examining the question of which clutch is better for the VAZ 2114, you should first talk about the general principles of operation of this mechanism. The clutch, which is the subject of our conversation, operates on the friction principle (unlike a number of clutches on other machines that use hydraulics in their operation).
Its main design and operating features can be expressed as follows:
- a dry single-disc clutch is used;
- a pressure spring is involved in the process of disengaging the clutch;
- the driven disk has a built-in vibration damper;
- The cable-type drive has no gaps between the bearing and the petals of the diaphragm spring.
As for the sizes, the Samara model has a clutch with a clutch diameter of 19 cm, and Samara 2 - 20 cm. In addition, later types of clutches have special dampers that make it possible to suppress uneven loads when rotating the crankshaft not only at idle, but also under load .
When purchasing a clutch in a store, the first thing you should do is carefully examine the box (take into account the quality of the fonts, paint, and its material) - this will help you protect yourself from buying a fake at the very first stage of your choice.
Purpose, design and typical malfunctions of the clutch bearing
It cannot be said that this is a “weak link” in the clutch of the VAZ 2110, however, this nuisance can and does remind you of itself with enviable consistency. Well, it “whistles”, even if it continues to “whistle”, it doesn’t affect the speed. Sometimes car owners think this way. For the time being.
The release bearing, or rather its clutch, is intended to directly act on the diaphragm (leaf) spring of the clutch basket, as a result of which the driven disk is disconnected from the flywheel and the pressure plate of the basket. We can say that this is the last link that disengages the clutch.
A malfunction of the release bearing is fraught with more serious and unjustifiable repairs, in which replacement of one bearing is no longer sufficient. This may be damage to the clutch fork, guide bushing, or breakage (bending, fracture) of the clutch basket diaphragm spring petals. The stingy one pays twice, and the lazy one in this case probably pays three times.
Of course, the noise or rustling of the release lever is not a direct command to replace it with the inability to continue driving the car, but you should not delay the repair. The need to replace the bearing manifests itself in the form of a characteristic sound (whistle, squeak, squeal - whatever you like). Sometimes it can occur after starting the engine, while all the components and assemblies of the car are still “cold”, and disappear when they warm up, or constantly remind themselves during operation of the power unit when the car’s clutch is disengaged.
In another, more serious case, when the release bearing fails, it can “grind” against the diaphragm spring, which can cause rapid wear on the clutch basket petals. In this case, the count will go on in kilometers and the sooner the bearing is replaced, the better and safer. It cannot be repaired, only replaced with a new one. Fortunately, the price of the bearing is low.
Which clutch to choose and how to do it?
Such an important issue as choosing a clutch for a VAZ 2114 requires a very serious approach. So, when you come to a car store to buy a new set, you should be careful - the number of fakes on the auto parts market is now very high (and clutch mechanisms are no exception). The first thing you need to pay attention to is the box.
If it is very “flimsy” and the fonts on it are not printed clearly, then it is better to refrain from purchasing. The same rule applies to boxes, the design of which can be erased with a finger - this is an obvious fake. If everything is in order at this stage of the purchase, then we move on to the next one - we evaluate the mechanism itself.
First, let's inspect the clutch disc. It must have the correct round shape, and its surface must be absolutely flat - without burrs, pits or chips. It is worth paying attention to the damper springs.
If the products are original, then they will always be either painted in some color or covered with colorless varnish. Even the manufacturers themselves advise checking originality in this way.
Having examined the disk, we move on to the bearing. To the question - which release bearing is better for the VAZ 2114, you can answer absolutely unequivocally - of course, steel!
But very often there are situations when even branded clutches have plastic bearings. This situation can be solved in two ways - refuse the purchase and purchase a kit from another company, or make a purchase and then replace the bearing with a standard one.
Leaving a clutch with a plastic bearing (even if it is made by a very well-known company) is not worth it. Over time, such bearings begin to wear out and make strange sounds while driving, or even completely fall apart.
Of course, you can generously lubricate the bearing, which will help to avoid rapid wear and noise for a short time, but this is not the best solution.
The last thing you will need to inspect before purchasing is the clutch basket. The alphanumeric codes on it should be clear and easily readable, and the paint should not rub off when touched. The petals of the basket should be even and located at the same levels.
If at least one of the petals turns out to be crooked, the car will constantly jerk, and strong vibration will be transmitted through the clutch pedal. That is why, if any defects are noticeable in the basket, you should immediately refuse the purchase, even if all other parts of the mechanism are of excellent quality.
Clutch basket
The main element of the clutch in any car is the basket; it plays the role of a drive disc. The basket is installed directly on the flywheel of the internal combustion engine. In the VAZ 2114 car it is secured using 6 bolts. Please note that when installing the drive plate, it is necessary to tighten it in a crisscross pattern. This will avoid distortion. The clutch basket has springy petals that are retracted with their edges into the release bearing. The VAZ 2114 clutch needs to be adjusted for the release bearing to work properly.
Clutch and driving style - how to choose?
Many drivers are interested in what clutch to put on a VAZ 2114, taking into account their favorite driving style? Let's look at the most popular kits that are most suitable for each driving style.
Standard. Assumes medium speeds, periodic accelerations during city driving and rare situations when the clutch engages abruptly.
For those who like this type of riding, the following are most suitable:
- VIS is a Russian-made clutch, reliable and of good quality.
- KraftTech is a high quality mechanism, comfortable, but with an average service life.
- Sachs is a medium clutch with a large torque reserve. Allows you to drive in calm, normal and dynamic modes.
Calm. Assumes low revs, easy, quiet shifting and smooth acceleration.
The most suitable products for this are:
- Valeo - excellent clutch with sufficient torque reserve and good wear resistance.
- Luk is a comfortable and smooth clutch, perhaps the best choice for those who like a relaxed driving style.
Dynamic. This driving style involves sharp gear changes with frequent clutch drop, as well as rapid acceleration. The clutch itself operates at high speeds most of the time.
Suitable for this style:
- Pilenga is a very rigid coupling, which allows you to avoid jerking and jerking (however, you should purchase a standard set, not a cermet one).
- Sachs is the best clutch for this driving style. Optimally tight and absorbs shock well.
Sports. Constant hard acceleration and regular clutch drop. For this style, we can recommend the same kits as for the dynamic one (Pilenga - also without metal ceramics). Only these clutches can provide the most comfortable driving with a sporty driving style.
Principles of clutch structure and its functions
In order to make the right choice when replacing a clutch, it is necessary to become familiar with its structure in general terms. The VAZ-2114 has a mechanical drive, which, compared to hydraulics, makes it much easier to operate, thereby not inferior in its strength.
Next, we should talk about the main signs that indicate existing problems with the clutch. These include:
- significant difficulties that arise when switching gears;
- sounds of unknown origin when squeezing;
- inclusion taking place in incomplete force;
- Slipping may also occur.
If any of these signs occur, you should contact a specialist for diagnosis. If the problem has not been resolved, the car owner faces the question of replacing the clutch. Based on this, it is necessary to decide on the choice of the most suitable clutch for the VAZ-2114 model.
This issue is gaining relevance due to frequent cases of breakdown of this machine part. There are many reasons for this, including the installation of parts containing defects or excessive loads on the transmission. Motorists who prefer aggressive driving may also encounter such difficulties.
HOW IT IS CHANGED
It is safe to say that repairs or adjustments to the clutch are carried out in case of wear of the linings; problems with the pressure plate or flywheel are less likely to occur.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A MALFUNCTION?
The culprits of breakdowns ahead of time are almost always the vehicle owners, and more specifically, their driving style. A sudden start of movement with “slipping”, or holding the foot on the pedal for a long time, have a negative impact on this mechanism.
The following facts indicate the presence of problems in the mechanism:
- The presence of jerks and vibrations during movement;
- Noise when shifting gearbox;
- Inability to engage or disengage the clutch mechanism.
Sometimes, unfortunately, spare parts of poor workmanship fail.
WHAT TO DO IF THIS UNIT IS "JAMBLING": ADJUSTMENT, REPLACEMENT OF THE CABLE AND CLUTCH
The first thing you need to do is try to adjust the VAZ 2114 clutch. The purpose of this adjustment is to change the length of the cable, its sheath, relative to its fasteners on the gearbox. These adjustments can be used to increase or decrease the pedal stroke. This operation is quite simple, any driver can perform it.
To adjust correctly, the procedure will be as follows:
- Place the car on a level surface and start the engine;
- They turn on first gear and try to move away. It is necessary to note the moment the car begins to move.
- When this happens at the end of the pedal stroke, it needs to be adjusted;
- Using a measuring ruler, the working pedal run-out is measured. To do this, squeeze it out completely and place a ruler next to it. You need to make a mark on it and release the pedal. At the end of the move, a mark is made again. The distance between the marks should be within 125 - 135 mm. If the dimensions are different, adjustments need to be made;
- Open the hood of the car and find the cable attachment point on the gearbox;
- There are two adjusting nuts on this assembly. They achieve the desired working stroke for the pedal.
Sometimes rust appears on the threaded part of the cable end. To remove it, treat this area with a “wedge”, brake fluid or oil. This will facilitate the process of carrying out adjustment work. At the same time, check the movement of the cable in the sheath and its condition. If broken wires are found, the cable is replaced with a new one.
Let's look at how to replace the clutch cable. The procedure for replacing the cable is simple. To do this, you need to prepare the tools:
- Wrenches set to “17”;
- Clutch cable;
- Tool for loosening rusty nuts;
- Litol 24 grease.
When everything is ready, they begin to work. You can invite someone to help, but this is not necessary. Get started in this order:
- Open the hood and find the cable attachment point on the gearbox;
- Using the keys “17”, release the cable in the fastening and remove it;
- Remove the cable tip from the clutch fork;
- Further work is carried out inside the car. Remove the carpet and upholstery in the area of the pedal assembly;
- Find the cable eye and disconnect it from the pedal;
- After this, he is pulled out into the engine compartment;
- If the cable is removed, then a new spare part can be installed. This is done in reverse order. This will complete the replacement of the clutch cable.
Before installing a new cable, remove and inspect the bushing from the pedal on which it rotates. If there are signs of severe wear, it must be replaced with a new one.
You need to start the engine again and check the operation of the clutch mechanism. If the problems have disappeared and it works as expected, continue driving. If they remain, then you need to replace the worn parts. As a rule, the driven disk linings wear out. In this case, only replacing the clutch disc will help.
To replace the clutch disc on a VAZ 2114, or so it is called replacing the clutch on a VAZ 2114, you need to disconnect the gearbox from the engine. To do this you need to prepare:
- Socket wrench and head for “8”, “19”;
- Beard with a small flat sting;
- L-shaped knob;
- Head "32";
- Mount, preferably with a bend;
- Key and head at “15”;
- Flat screwdriver;
- Mandrel for centering the clutch disc;
- Jack.
In the future, proceed as follows:
- Disconnect and remove the battery, the housing together with the air filter and the mass air flow sensor. It is necessary to remove the starter and speed sensor from the gearbox;
- Place the chocks under the rear wheels and tighten the handbrake. Raise the left side with a jack and remove the left wheel, and then remove the right one in the same way;
- Next, unscrew the locknuts on the hub and remove the lever. If there are mudguards and crankcase protection, they are also removed;
- It is necessary to place a support under the engine and fix the engine in such a suspended state;
- Remove the jet rod and the link from the gearbox;
- The next step is to drain the oil from the gearbox housing, disconnect the connector from the reverse speed switch;
- The key at “19” is intended for unscrewing the box from the engine block;
- When the bolts are removed, lower the engine slightly and move the box away from the block. An assistant will be required to perform this operation;
- They pull out both drives and put plugs in their place. They are needed to fix the main gear. You can remove the gearbox;
- Using an “8” wrench or a socket, unscrew the bolts securing the basket with the flywheel and remove it.
The gearbox must be installed in the reverse order. Only the slave disk needs alignment. It is made using a special mandrel. Once it is centered, you can tighten the bolts securing the basket.
Which clutch is best for the VAZ-2114
Today, specialized stores provide a wide selection of such spare parts, so the question “How to choose the necessary clutch that can last a long time?” is becoming quite relevant.
It is no secret to anyone that without this part the process of setting the car in motion and, accordingly, stopping it will be simply impossible. Thanks to it, the torque is transmitted between the crankshaft and the wheels, front or rear. It depends on whether the car is front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. It should also be taken into account that this part acts as the main connecting link. When moving, the shaft reaches a large number of revolutions and it is simply impossible to go directly to the wheels. This is what the clutch is for. The name itself characterizes its direct purpose, namely to connect and disconnect the heart of the car - the engine with the wheels - by shifting the gearbox. This part provides communication between the engine and the wheels by using the desired shift stage.
How does the clutch work?
It allows you to disconnect the gearbox and engine when changing gears. In addition, it helps ensure smooth starting. If it were not there, the car would start very abruptly. Let's simulate a simple situation that every motorist faces many times a day. You start the engine and get ready to take a trip. To do this, you press the VAZ 2114 pedal. The clutch starts working. Before this, the gearbox input shaft was rigidly connected to the engine crankshaft. After this, the release bearing begins to act on the petals of the basket. The gap between the driven disk and the working surface of the basket increases.
As the gap increases, torque transmission stops. Therefore, the car does not move. Now you are releasing the pedal very slowly. The opposite phenomenon occurs, during which the gap between the driven disk and the basket gradually decreases. Partial torque begins to be transmitted to the input shaft of the gearbox. As a result, the car begins to move, the VAZ 2114 clutch driven disc is completely adjacent to the surface of the basket. When changing gears, it is also necessary to disconnect the gearbox and engine shafts. This makes the transition from one speed to another smoother and more unnoticeable for the driver and passengers.
Which clutch is better to install on VAZ 2110 and 2114? Choice matters
For those car owners who are going to repair the engine, it will be interesting to know which clutch is better to install on the VAZ 2110 and 2114. Interest in this can be caused by various reasons. But in most cases it occurs when it fails too quickly. This can happen due to the installation of defective parts, heavy loads on the transmission, aggressive driving style and other circumstances.
Which clutch is best to install on the VAZ 2110 and 2114 may also be of interest to owners because retail chains have a fairly large selection of such spare parts. Many drivers, especially those who are encountering such a problem for the first time, will be interested in this article. It will allow them to confidently navigate their choice, or control what the mechanics will install during repairs.
VAZ clutch rating
Existing offers on the market can be divided into several groups. The best manufacturers and modifications of VAZ clutches are presented below.
7th place: STARCO
The ranking of the best market offers opens with a company that is a product that combines the developments of engineers from the USA and Turkey. In principle, the company is represented on the Russian market as a Turkish brand, but technological developments have been collected from all over the world. Such a symbiosis ensures sufficient reliability, high quality indicators and reasonable cost, which attracts a large number of domestic motorists.
Why is it needed?
Without installing this mechanism on the car, the operation of the gearbox, the process of starting to move or stopping the car will be impossible. This unit serves as the main link for transmitting torque from the engine crankshaft to the drive wheels. The shaft rotates at a high number of revolutions, so direct access to the wheels is simply impossible. The connecting link between the engine shaft and the vehicle transmission is the clutch.
From its very name the principle of operation of this mechanism becomes clear. It is designed to connect and disconnect the motor with the drive wheels through the gearbox. With its help, there is a direct connection between the engine shaft and the wheels of the car; for this, it has several switching stages. The clutch mechanism provides just such an opportunity.
Methods for checking clutch failure:
- The first method
is best done with an assistant. The car can be placed on an overpass or raised on a lift. While one of you is pressing the clutch pedal with the engine not running, the other is listening for noises and knocks from the clutch. If there are various extraneous knocks and creaks, it’s worth considering whether it’s time for maintenance.
- The second method
is quite easy. Start the engine, press the clutch pedal and engage reverse gear. When turned on, no grinding or noise should be heard. If, on the contrary, it is necessary to replace the driven disk.
- Third way
. When driving, accelerate the car to a speed of 30–40 km/h and sharply press the gas pedal. If the speed of the car increases in proportion to the number of engine revolutions, then everything is in order. But if the engine speed increases faster than the vehicle speed, then you need to contact a service center.
If the clutch is hydraulically driven, then you should pay attention to the components included in the hydraulic drive for the presence of fluid leaks from the system. If necessary, replace and bleed the system.
The listed methods for determining clutch failure will help save time, prevent unnecessary repairs and expensive investments. And if at least one of the signs appears, you should not waste time, but immediately contact a service station.
The clutch system is used in all modern cars paired with a manual transmission. This unit has the main task of transmitting and adjusting torque from the car engine to its chassis. Average life of the main clutch parts
it is generally accepted to be 120-150 thousand kilometers. When the first symptoms of a malfunction appear, it is recommended to immediately carry out repairs and replace worn parts, otherwise there is a risk of being left on the road with a stationary car.
What parts wear out in the clutch:
1. Clutch disc.
Under load of high torque, the friction linings wear down and become ineffective. In addition to everything else, severe wear of the linings leads to a high probability of damaging the engine flywheel. The rivets that secure the pads to the disc itself become exposed and begin to scratch the flywheel, resulting in overheating and imbalance.
Damper springs serve to dampen vibrations and smooth load transfer. In the constant process of frictional friction, the temperature of the clutch disc can reach about 200-300 degrees, which does not have a favorable effect on steel springs. They lose their elasticity, burst, and become shorter. Their productivity is falling.
2. Release bearing.
The main job of the release bearing is to move the clutch disc away from the release plate (basket) and the flywheel. Wear of this part manifests itself primarily in the appearance of play in the bearing itself.
3. Release plate (clutch basket)
As a rule, the clutch basket itself is capable of maintaining a service life longer than the disc and release bearing, 2 or even 3 times more. But we do not recommend doing this. Due to overheating, the release plate petals burst and can damage not only parts of the clutch system, but also the engine. During operation, the release disc is subject to grinding, its thickness becomes smaller, and at high temperatures, there is a possibility of it splitting into several parts.
4. Clutch drive.
By definition, passenger cars use a mechanical and hydraulic clutch drive system. The second option is much more common and is used on most modern machines.
In turn, the hydraulic drive is divided into:
Clutch slave cylinder - which drives the movement of the release bearing directly.
Clutch master cylinder - transmits the force of the driver acting on the clutch pedal, through a pipeline system, to the slave cylinder at the basket.
How can you determine clutch disc wear?
Before you begin to determine the degree of wear of the clutch disc, it is recommended to remember its service life. Everyone knows that in the city rhythm of driving a car, the clutch works a third less than in mixed driving, and with constant driving exclusively on country roads, there have been cases when, with a mileage of 300 thousand kilometers, it was not necessary to change it. So if you have already skated 80 thousand miles while living in the city, it’s time to think about replacing it.
Clutch disc wear
, namely the thickness of the friction linings, is not difficult to determine by the way the pedal moves.
To do this, first of all, you must have the pedal stroke set correctly (for all cars it is different, on average 13-15 cm; in most cases, the clutch pedal should be 1-2 cm higher than the brake pedal).
- —
Place the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- —
Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
- —
Engage 1st gear and slowly release the clutch pedal. At the same time, you must not allow the car engine to stall. As you gradually release the clutch pedal, pay attention at what stage the engine begins to transmit torque to the wheels. If vibration appears on the body, complete the work.
Visually try to divide the pedal stroke into 3 parts if:
1.
The clutch began to engage at the very beginning of the pedal stroke, which means the disc and its friction linings are in excellent or good condition. Most likely it was only recently installed.
2.
Pickup of torque begins in the middle of the pedal stroke, indicating 40-50% wear of the clutch disc.
3.
The clutch engages at the end of the pedal stroke or does not engage completely (it begins to slip). Wear in this case is approaching the final stage. If a burnt smell appears, the clutch disc must be replaced immediately, otherwise it may damage the flywheel.
In addition, vibration when starting off and slipping when driving at the moment of applying gas are also evidence of severe wear of the clutch disc.
How to check the serviceability of the release bearing
To begin with, it should be determined that release bearings installed on modern passenger cars come in two types. The first type is a regular release bearing for mechanical action (usually a clutch fork), and the second is hydraulic, using a fluid coupling. In terms of design, the second option is considered more capricious, but its use is being used more and more often today.
Common symptoms of severe release bearing wear:
- a buzzing sound appears
when pressing the clutch pedal. This is due to the fact that torque and load begin to flow onto the broken bearing, which in turn makes such sounds.
- appearance of vibration
at the moment the car starts moving, occurs due to the coaxial displacement of the working plane.
Hydraulic bearing release bearings have:
1.
Airing the hydraulic drive circuit through the hydraulic coupling cylinder. The pedal becomes soft and the clutch stops working.
2.
Leakage of brake fluid through a violation of the oil seals and seals, as a result of which it is impossible to disengage the clutch.
What a good clutch should look like:
The transmission of torque occurs smoothly, without jerks or impacts.
The travel of the clutch pedal from the moment it is turned on to the moment it is turned off is approximately half the entire distance.
Gear shifting occurs without a characteristic sound from the gearbox shafts not stopping.
When you press the clutch pedal, and exactly as when you release it, no extraneous sounds should appear
In general, the clutch system is considered a strong and reliable unit that does not require frequent and constant outside intervention, and its service life and degree of wear largely depend on the style and location of driving.
During the operation of the clutch, various problems sometimes arise, the signs of which may be knocking and extraneous noise, incomplete engagement or disengagement, non-return or sticking of the pedal, slipping or sudden engagement, and so on.
About clutch selection
Among the wide variety of such mechanisms, the most often paid attention to the kits of the following companies:
- KRAFTTECH
country of manufacture is not indicated on the packaging; - LuK
is made in Germany; - VALEO
also manufacturer unknown;
Let's look at the test results obtained. A weight check showed that all sets comply with GOST requirements for this mechanism. The spread of indicators is not very large, the smallest weight is found in the KRAFTTECH kit, and the greatest weight was found in products from PILENG. The mass indicator affects the rotational vibrations of the disks and possible inertial loads on the vehicle transmission. We can say with confidence that there will be no visible changes from installing various kits.
Checking the permissible torque showed results that were slightly worse than those required by the car manufacturer. Of the five samples that were tested, only two confirmed the declared characteristics. These are kits from KRAFTTECH
" and "
PILENGA
". They fully comply with the safety factor, the coefficient is 2.1. The conclusion of the experts is that for the “ten” you can use all the kits, and for more powerful engines only the specified ones.
The VAZINTERSERVICE kit did not pass the imbalance test; its value turned out to be more than three times higher than the nominal value. There are also complaints about the VALEO
“, but he is only about 20% above the norm. The remaining disks were within acceptable parameters. The testers did not have any unnecessary questions about them.
Checking the imbalance of the driven disks gave more encouraging results. Of the five tested kits, complaints appeared only about one, this product is from, the indicator was within the upper control indicator. There were questions about this kit regarding the force when squeezing it. It is also noted that there is insufficient travel of the pressure plates despite the fact that its setting value is set when turning off.
After checking the distance from the end of the petals to the friction surface with the release bearing, it turned out that the same “PILENGA” does not fit into the specified parameters. This value is standardized for each model specifically; it is one of the main characteristics of the assembled mechanism. If this norm is exceeded, you should expect accelerated wear of the driven disks.
If a problem is discovered with any part of the mechanism, experts advise changing the entire set, that is, the release bearing, the basket with the driven disk. This is explained by the fact that not in all cases complete interaction of all parts of the mechanism is possible if they are used from different sets.
In this short review, we tried to highlight the question of which clutch is best to install on the VAZ 2110 and 2114. Of course, it is impossible to get an absolutely complete answer, since it happens that world-famous brands sometimes fail, but you can navigate when choosing the right spare part you already can.

When is clutch adjustment required?
VAZs use a dry type of clutch, that is, there is a basket consisting of two parts - driving and driven
Clutch adjustment of the VAZ 2114, and other vehicles, is carried out in cases where defects associated with the operation of this mechanism appear. Such malfunctions include:
- clutch pedal adjustment;
- clutch cable adjustment;
- pedal height adjustment;
- clutch adjustment.
In another case, the need to adjust the clutch drive may arise due to previous incorrect adjustment. It is possible to reduce or increase the working stroke of its pedal.
The photo shows the clutch of a VAZ 2114
As a result, malfunctions occur in the operation of the drive - the clutch begins to “slip” or “drive”, gear shifting becomes difficult, jerks appear when starting from a standstill, fuel consumption increases, etc.

Checking the working stroke of the clutch pedal VAZ 2114
Let's measure the travel of the car's clutch pedal. Before doing this, we move the carpet on the floor of the car back so that the measurements are more accurate.
- Using a tape measure, measure the distance from the floor of the car to the bottom edge of the clutch pedal
- The image shows how best to do this.
- It should be approximately 18-20 cm.
- Press the clutch pedal all the way with your hand and measure the distance from the floor to the bottom edge of the pedal.
- It should be 6-7 cm
- Subtract from 18-20, 6-7, it turns out 13-14 cm
This is the norm for the full travel of the clutch pedal of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars and their modifications. Many repair manuals indicate a working stroke size of 12.5-13.5 cm, which is also very close to our measurement.
If the clutch pedal travel differs more or less, it is necessary to adjust the clutch drive.
Clutch pedal adjustment
Periodic adjustment of the VAZ 21014 clutch pedal is carried out for the following reasons:
- When driving on a non-adjustable clutch pedal, subsequent repairs are possible, because exaggerated energy costs for incorrect operation of the mechanism will cause malfunctions of other components of the car.
- Due to improper functioning, the clutch pedal periodically does not function. This leads to the fact that the pressure plate of the unit is forced into “engagement” with the motor flywheel, as a result of which they are subject to accelerated wear.
- If the pedal stroke is insufficient, the vehicle slips, i.e. the required torque of the wheel pair is lost.
To carry out diagnostic work on adjusting the clutch pedal, you need to use an arithmetic ruler to measure the length of the pedal stroke to the floor. If it does not correspond to 16 cm, then adjustments are necessary.
Signs of incorrect operation of the clutch mechanism: there is no possibility of a smooth start from a standstill, movement from a standstill is accompanied by jerks and jolts, when changing gears the transmission makes increased noise, the pedal of the mechanism falls to the lower position.
In practice, it turns out this way: if the vehicle began to move from the moment the pedal began to be lowered, then the free play does not correspond to the required value. When the pedal is completely released, the vehicle does not move, which means there is no free movement in the car.
Clutch pedal adjustment:
- Unscrew the nut located under the clutch pedal.
- Tighten the locknut located below until it stops.
- Next, screw in the fasteners located under the clutch pedal.
- We tighten the rubber washer to the clutch fork as far as possible.
- To increase the pedal stroke, you need to screw the fastener onto the tip. To reduce the pedal stroke, you need to unscrew this fastener. The VAZ 2109 clutch pedal is adjusted until the limit of 12-13 cm is reached.
- After completing the pedal adjustment operations, you need to: depress the pedal three times, measure the length of the pedal stroke, adjust the operation until the required stroke length is achieved.
To adjust the hydraulics you need:
- Remove the spring from the mountings of the working cylinder and the clutch fork.
- Adjust the fasteners located on the clutch cylinder rod.
- The recommended free play value is 0.5 cm.
Often, a large pedal stroke depends on the height of its location from the driver's floor, and this creates certain difficulties. To adjust the height, a series of simple plumbing operations and a wrench set to “12” are required:
We find two fasteners on the steering column shaft, one is a thrust screw that limits the height adjustment position, the second is a lock nut that changes the movement of the pedal.
- Unscrew the stop screw.
- We give it rotation until the pedal movement normalizes.
- Screw in the locknut.
If slippage is observed after adjusting the clutch, then the following operations must be performed:
- Remove the stem locknut.
- Move it until there is no free movement.
- Return the rod one full turn.
- Determine whether the clutch has free play.
- Test the operation of the transmission gears. If there is an incomprehensible noise, you need to perform the above operations again.
- Screw in the locknut.
Adjusting the clutch drive (cable) of the VAZ 2114
The clutch drive adjusting nut is located in the engine compartment of the car on the drive cable sheath, inserted into a special bracket mounted on the gearbox housing. It is protected from unscrewing by a lock nut located there.
Holding the adjusting nut with one 17 mm wrench, use another 17 mm wrench to loosen the lock nut a few turns.
Adjusting the clutch cable VAZ 2114
- We rotate the adjusting nut clockwise with one key, holding the locknut with the other - this is to increase the clutch pedal travel (the pedal will rise) or counterclockwise to decrease its travel (the pedal will lower to the floor)
- How much to reduce or, conversely, increase the pedal stroke is determined based on the results of the check described above.
- Lightly tighten the locknut
- Press the clutch pedal several times and check again
If the resulting figure does not fit within the norm, we carry out the adjustment again. And so on until we achieve the required result.
After completing the adjustment, tighten the locknut
When the clutch is properly adjusted, the clutch pedal should be approximately level with the brake pedal.
Adjusting the VAZ 2109 clutch
Clutch tightening VAZ 2114
This operation is carried out in cases where there are shocks or friction when the clutch is engaged, slight slipping of the clutch when the clutch is pressed for a long time, the clutch “drives.”
To adjust the clutch, do the following:
- Place the gearshift lever in the “neutral” position.
- We dismantle the clutch housing.
- We dismantle the bearing. Repair operations should be carried out smoothly and calmly, because the bearing may be defective.
- Rotate the adjusting fastener until the pedal movement is completely adjusted.
- We test the clutch for oil leaks, otherwise the clutch mechanism may slip. To eliminate this problem, it is necessary to treat the coupling with a degreasing compound.

Clutch kits for VAZ (Lada) 2113/2114/2115
for repair of VAZ (Lada) 2113/2114/2115
I took VIS, not as a set, but separately - it lasted a long time, it worked well. Again I took the VIS kit assembled in one box - it was crap. It began to beat immediately and until his complete death. There was very little walking.
When I took it apart, I saw a curved disc and unevenly worn friction material on it.
I took a soft Craft clutch. The clutch runs fine, but the release lever is already rustling. I put it at the service station due to lack of time. They unpacked it and lubricated it in front of me. It's only been 5k. The warranty is going to be rejected... In general, for about 5 more thousand I will put up with this rustling noise and will change the release valve.
I will not contact Craft again. CV joints are only GLO, struts are either SAAZ or something else, any kind of clutch, but not Craft now.
I bought a clutch from this company as a set, a VAZ 2114, installed everything, but the gears simply did not engage, as soon as the cable was not pulled, there was simply no clutch and that’s it, I had to remove the box twice.
In fact, I bought an original VAZ release and only then did it become normal to release, I’m not happy with the clutch, it jerks, extremely negative review.
In general, the Pilenga’s clutch is absolutely perfect. Everything is fine.
I changed the clutch about a thousand km ago and set it to sachs, at idle when the clutch pedal is released there is a noise, when I press the clutch a little the clutch disappears, also when the engine is running and the clutch is pressed the sound is heard as if something is rubbing.
I installed this clutch a month ago. Satisfied.
The Sachs is much more enjoyable to ride due to its stiffness.
In general, I installed a Valeo clutch. The feelings are mixed. Before this there was Krafttech. It took about 40 thousand. I think it could have been more if I hadn’t driven through dense snow to the dacha in the spring... It starts much faster. I'm having a hard time getting used to it.
A long time ago, it was decided to change and buy a clutch from Valeo... I have known this company for a long time (I installed the same company in both the four and the VAZ 21114). I can’t say anything bad about Valeo - it worked flawlessly, and here I think it won’t let me down...
The other day I changed the clutch on a Sachs. I’ll say this, Sachs really liked it, it rips well.
