ECU functionality

What tasks does the engine ECU perform?
The basic functions of the car engine control unit include:

- control of the exhaust gas recirculation system;

ECU design features
The control unit housing provides reliable protection from various negative factors - moisture, temperature fluctuations. If the device is located under the hood, the body is made of aluminum, if in the cabin it is made of plastic.
There is a bulk board inside. It contains two basic units - memory and software.
The control unit memory is divided into three types:
- PROM. All the software and functions responsible for the operation of the engine are stored here.

- ERPZU. Acts for storing temporary parameters - various codes, mileage, fuel consumption, temperature indicators.
Software also comes in two types:
- Functional. Provides reception of data from sensors, their processing and sends commands to the appropriate systems.
- Control. Monitors incoming parameters for various errors. If such problems appear, he tries to correct them. Otherwise, an error message will flash on the control panel. Moreover, if the error is critical, the car may not start at all.
Microprocessor device
The operation of a microprocessor is built around 3 components:
- Random access memory (RAM). RAM is necessary to store changing data received from sensor equipment. This data is used by the microprocessor in calculations and is stored only while the engine is running/ignition on. Such data includes, for example, a signal from a knock sensor, lambda probe readings, on the basis of which a short-term correction is formed.
- Read-only memory (ROM or EEPROM) is a rewritable memory that stores the data processing and control program for ECU elements, as well as important variables that cannot be lost when the power is turned off.
- Read-only memory (RM or EEPROM) - stores the immobilizer key recognition code, vehicle equipment configuration, fault codes, etc.
On some vehicles, engine fault codes are stored in RAM, so removing the terminal clears them. In more modern ECM designs, special diagnostic equipment is required to clear codes from the EEPROM.
Where to look for the ECU in a car

Malfunctions

In accordance with the clarifications of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation dated June 28, 2012 No. 17 “On the consideration by courts of civil cases in disputes regarding the protection of consumer rights,” citizens’ requirements for the quality of software used in a technically complex product (for example, an operating system) should be considered as requirements for the quality of the product as a whole, taking into account its consumer properties in accordance with Art. 469 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation (clause 39 of Resolution No. 17).
