Low beam doesn't come on
Why isn't the low beam on? Main causes of malfunction:
- The low beam lamp does not light up. Our cars are equipped with double-filament halogen lamps, i.e. Both the low and high beam headlights are provided by one lamp, the different filaments of the lamp just light up. Replace the lamp with a known working one. To find out how to properly replace a lamp, see the article Replacing lamps
- The fuse has blown. The low beam fuse has blown, check the fuse and replace it. You will find answers on how to find, check and replace the fuse in the article Fuses.
- The wires have oxidized. We look at the fuse block, namely the blocks of all tires to the fuse and relay block. They can become detached, poorly secured, or oxidize. Let's fix it. We also look at the wires connected to the lamp itself; the contact group of the headlight may have oxidized.
- Low beam power button. The fact is that the switch (button) for the low beam or side lights may have broken. The problem is typical: the wire has come loose or oxidized.
- The low beam fuse keeps blowing. This situation often occurs among owners of Russian automakers. There can be 2 options: a wire is short somewhere;
- again poor contact with the fuse.
If nothing helps you, then you will need to understand the wiring; we recommend contacting an electrician.
POST REPAIR PROCEDURES
After the new VAZ 2114 low beam bulb is installed, it is necessary to check the assembled headlight unit for leaks. If it is not there, then the headlights will at least fog up, and at most dirt, dust and water will get inside them when it rains.
In addition, you should not experiment and try to install more powerful lamps in your headlights, since the fuse and wiring may not withstand the increased voltage, and there will be a constantly increased load on the generator. It is not even recommended to install additional headlights; it is better to contact a specialist and set up your family correctly - there will be more practical benefit from this.
SAFETY
Safety precautions when carrying out such work deserve a few words. The main danger is the thin glass of the lamps - it can burst from the slightest pressure, so it is better to work with glasses and thin gloves so as not to harm yourself. And if a breakdown of this kind occurred on the road, then you should not start repairs right on the highway; it is better to drive to a gas station or the nearest populated area.
The main result is that the headlights are shining ok
This is where all the nuances end, now you know how to change the low beam bulbs on a VAZ 2114 with your own hands quickly and correctly!

Fact: every third car owner encounters a situation where the low beam headlights are not on, but the high beam is on. Straightforward logic on the topic that if the optics are covered, then there should be no light at all does not work here.
This also happens, for example, to many VAZ owners: on Tolyatti models, for some reason, the right headlight is susceptible to the disease described, even on almost new cars; with the left, this incident happens much less often.
However, you should not blame exclusively domestic, so much-maligned, manufacturers: optics can sooner or later start to act up on any car. And here the point is no longer about the reliability of this or that brand, but rather about the deterioration or fatigue of some parts.
The easiest way, without a doubt, is to entrust everything to the reliable hands of a trusted auto electrician, but it is not too difficult to cope with some problems on your own - if you have the smallest amount of free time and a primitive acquaintance with the basics of electrical circuits.
The low beam of the headlights does not light up, but the high beam is on - this phenomenon can be due to several reasons. And most of them are quite easy to fix. Moreover, this can happen to your car at a completely inopportune moment: on the highway, for example, when you need to switch to low beam so as not to blind oncoming drivers with headlights. Let's try to deal with all the flaws one by one, and consider: what might be the most common options for repairing and troubleshooting such an important segment as low-beam lighting.
How to replace headlight bulbs?
Replacing lamps in headlights in almost all cars is similar, since all headlights consist of a housing, a light diffuser and a light source, a reflector. But despite the wide variety, headlights can be divided into two types: with a fixed or moving lens. In addition, high and low beam can be provided either by one double-filament lamp, or by two separate ones.
After replacing the lamps is completed, it is imperative to check the tightness of the headlights, because if it is broken, then dirt or water can get inside, and at temperature all this can harden and form carbon deposits! In addition, there is no need to install more powerful lamps on your car, because they do not provide a very significant increase in illumination, which can be obtained if the standard headlights are adjusted correctly. Also, there is no need to add additional headlights with powerful lamps to your vehicle, because they only add significant load to the generator.

It's time to move on to the replacement process itself. To do this, you may need a thin screwdriver or an awl. It is also advisable to have a magnet on a long flexible handle when replacing, but such a device is not always necessary. In this case, instructions for replacing lamps may also be needed if you are not an expert in this field.

Lamp burned out
Naturally, if any light source does not turn on, the first thing that comes to mind is that the light bulb has burned out. The design of car lamps is such that the low beam may indeed be absent, but the high beam remains available. Halogen lamps have two filaments. It is quite possible for one of them to rupture - in this case, the light for which it is responsible will be absent.
To replace the bulb, the services of an auto electrician are not required. It is enough to open the hood with the ignition off, remove the protective box on both sides of the headlight, pull out the contact group, disconnect the spring clips, remove the burnt out bulb and install a new one.
A small detail: the flask should be wiped with alcohol before installation, otherwise it will instantly burn. It is also not recommended to handle the bulb with unprotected hands: there is always some greasy and damp secretions on them, which can damage the light bulb. The best way to do this (replace the lighting) is with a dry cloth or rag.
REPLACING LIGHT BULB
Replacing low beam lamps on a VAZ 2114 is, in principle, similar to a similar procedure with any other car, since any headlight unit consists of the following components:
- Frame;
- Light diffuser;
- Lamps;
- Reflector.
Despite the external differences, in most cars the principle remains the same.
REPLACEMENT PROCESS
In order to successfully replace the light bulb, we need the following tools: an awl, screwdrivers and detailed instructions, which are written below. There is nothing complicated in this operation, so by doing everything in order and carefully, you can do everything quickly and with your own hands, without overpaying for such a simple procedure to the technicians at the service station.
So, the step-by-step instructions look like this:
- Turn off the ignition, remove the key from the lock and open the hood;
- Having decided which side of the block we need to unscrew, we approach it and remove the protective box from it. It is bolted on both sides;
- Now you need to carefully remove the contact group from the reflector;
- Next, we find the spring clamps and carefully release them;
- We take out the lamp;
- We insert a new one into the vacant space and assemble everything in the reverse order.
Before replacing the glass flask, it is advisable to wipe it with alcohol, that is, degrease it. If this is not done, fingerprints and dust will remain on the inside. The lamp itself needs to be placed correctly; there is only one position for it.
An ordinary VAZ 2114 halogen low beam lamp, which is installed on the car from the factory, costs about 200 rubles, so if you don’t spend money on the services of a service station, then the repair is not that expensive.
Fuse blown
An equally common reason why headlights do not light up. The block where all the car fuses are grouped is opened, the pinout of their location is taken and the required one is looked for. A burnt jumper is in most cases visible to the naked eye. Even a schoolboy can handle sticking a whole part into place, so a trip to the service station in this case will probably also be unnecessary.
By the way, if fuses blow with unenviable regularity, it means there is a breakdown somewhere in the wiring. Either wire the entire circuit yourself, or visit a professional electrician - problems with the wires can lead to all sorts of troubles, including a fire.
Problems with wires: And in very different places. You will have to check all the connectors at the connection to the relay and the fuse box. They may be poorly screwed and fall off; may oxidize and not pass current. In the first case, it is enough to tighten the clamping nuts; in the second, clean the contacts.
You should also check the power button: very often the wire that leads to it becomes oxidized or comes loose. We can say that in domestic cars, first of all, you should inquire about the button, and only then go somewhere deeper.
Headlight device
The first thing to keep in mind when it comes to light problems is the placement of the headlight itself.
Typically, this element includes the following components:
- Front light bulbs;
- Rear lights;
- Turn signals;
- Parking lights.
In addition, fog lights can be optionally installed in some configurations.
There are also several reasons why only the low beam may fail out of this entire list, namely:
- Burning bulbs;
- Oxidation of contacts on light bulb sockets or lamp sockets;
- Open circuit;
- Fuses have blown;
- Broken on/off button.
As you can see, there are not many possible causes for the problem, and finding them with the correct diagnosis will not be easy.
Non-standard reasons
Sometimes the abnormal operation of headlights is caused by completely unusual factors. There was an indescribable incident when the owner removed the headlight cleaners from his Niva because they had not functioned for a long time. As a result, he lost low beam on both headlights.
And it took me a while to guess the reason! During the experiments, the owner found out that to obtain low beam, the presence of at least one of the motors is required, and it does not matter which one - left or right.
In the end, he simply short-circuited the connector, as if simulating the presence of a headlight cleaner. There were no further problems with light. So if you tapped all the links of the chain, but have not established the reason for the headlights, try to remember if you recently made any improvements to the design of your car. Perhaps in the process of these changes some engineering design was violated, which is the reason for the disappearance of light.
However, if such simple, although usually effective, measures do not produce the desired effect, you will still have to remember the phone number of a familiar auto electrician. Otherwise, you can spend a lot of time looking for reasons and never find them.
Having found out why the low beam of the headlights does not light up, but the high beam is on, and having learned to deal with this phenomenon, one day you may encounter the opposite problem, when there is a low beam, but no high beam. The reasons for these vagaries are, in principle, the same as in the previous case, only supplemented by a possible breakdown of the steering column switch. So if the reason for the strange behavior of the headlights has not been identified, and the low beam is still missing, it is likely that you will have to replace it.
Lamp failure and replacement
The car is equipped with halogen lamps with two filaments located in one housing. One of them is responsible for the high beam, the other for the low beam. To make sure that the reason for the lack of light lies precisely in the lamp, it is enough to replace it with a known good one. To do this, find the cover under the hood that covers the headlight unit. Turn it clockwise to open it. Next you will see a three-pin connector that needs to be removed. Now all that remains is to remove the lamp by moving the spring clips to the side. Do not forget that the new lighting element should not be held by the glass - greasy marks will impair heat transfer and the lamp will quickly fail. Therefore, take it by the contacts, insert it into the grooves, put on the spring clips and close the lid by turning it counterclockwise. When replacing a lamp, pay attention to the contacts in the connector - they should not be oxidized.
Adjustment
Once a year, the low beam on the VAZ 2110 should be adjusted. This procedure is necessary in order to increase the lighting efficiency and also to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers.
Below we will take a closer look at how to adjust the low beam headlights:
- You need to find a flat area with a wall that will serve as a screen.
- The car should be placed at a distance of five meters from the screen. A passenger must sit in front. You can also put a load weighing 75 kilograms in the car.
- On the screen you need to draw a horizontal line at 600 mm, as well as a second line 75 mm below the first.
- Then you need to draw three vertical lines - the two outer lines should correspond to the centers of the headlights, and the middle one should be located in the middle between them.
- The headlight hydraulic adjustment handle should be moved to the position corresponding to the minimum load.
- One of the headlights must be covered with cardboard or a sheet of plywood.
- Then the light beam is adjusted according to the diagram. Adjustment is carried out with screws with plastic heads, which are located on the back side of the headlights. They rotate the optical element around the horizontal and vertical axis.
- Next, you need to adjust the second headlight in the same way.
Here, in fact, is all the information on how to adjust the low beam headlights.
