Repair and installation of suspension (shock absorbers/springs/struts/levers), part 3

Ford Focus 2 rear suspension repair: is it all that complicated or simple? The word “repair” can plunge many car enthusiasts into quite a shock - everyone knows the prices charged by auto repair shops for replacing parts. However, the good news will be two factors: Ford cars are distinguished by the durability of their parts and their unfailing quality; Due to design features (ease of assembly and disassembly), Ford parts can be replaced by yourself.

A silent block (translated from English literally as “quiet part”) is a rubber-metal hinge, an element of machines and mechanisms. In cars, it connects suspension parts, and, thanks to the elastic insert between the bushings, dampens vibrations between structural units.

    Rear silent blocks

    Ford Focus 2 is equipped with an independent rear suspension with four levers on each side. Each lever has its own rubber-metal hinges of completely different sizes and degrees of resistance to loads, through which three transverse levers are attached. These, in turn, connect the trailing arms, which are load-bearing elements.

    When do you need to change silent blocks on a Ford Focus 2?

    Ford Focus 2 silent blocks are designed for a vehicle mileage of 100,000 kilometers. Poor-quality road surfaces, drying out of the lubricant of parts, and dust or moisture getting into the joints reduce the service life of the hinges by half. Therefore, car manufacturers recommend changing these elements every 30 - 40 thousand km.

    You can realize that it is time to make a replacement based on several visible and audible signs.
    If the car does not obey the steering wheel or responds late to turning, the silent blocks are worn out. A loud knock made by the rear suspension is also a sign of repairs.
    To confirm your suspicions, you can look under the bottom of the car, cleaning the parts that interest you. For comparison, it is advisable to know what the new hinges look like or have them in front of your eyes.

    Signs of a failed silent block

    You can notice signs of wear on the rubber-metal hinges and examine them in detail in the inspection hole. First of all, attention is drawn to the swollen or displaced rubber of an element, then the degree of its smoothness and integrity.

    If the hinge seal is cracked or torn, the arms will bend in their position.

    It would be useful to pay attention to the uniform wear of the car tires and check the play in the hinges.

    How to replace silent blocks and what you need for this

    A common problem is the breakdown of parts of the front suspension arm: the silent block of the rear mount or the ball. When replacing the rear hinge of the Ford Focus 2 front suspension, a repair diagram will not be needed, since the silent block is not removable. In the event of a breakdown, the entire lever will have to be replaced.
    It’s easier with the rear suspension - here you can carry out independent repairs after a preliminary inspection. We will consider replacing the silent blocks of the rear suspension of Ford Focus 2 in detail. First, remove the wheels.

    Necessary tool

    During the work you will need the following tools:

    • Set of keys and socket heads.
    • Jack and brush for metal
    • Hammer and chisel
    • WD-40 and graphite grease
    • Rags.

    Purchase a set of silent blocks at a specialized store.

    Replacing front silent blocks

    The first step is to jack up the car and remove the wheel.
    When replacing the front control arm bushings, first remove the tire. Find the hinge fasteners, unscrew and remove the silent block. Then it’s the lever’s turn: pull the stand towards you and unscrew the bolts holding the lever. Before installing a new hinge, clean its seat from rust. Using WD-40 you can give the part the necessary slip for installation. When seating the new part, use a hammer to gently tap it into place. Replace the front arm of a Ford Focus 2 with a non-removable hinge. After replacement, reassemble the structure in reverse order. Tighten the replaced front hinge to the car. At the end of the work, check and adjust the wheel alignment.

    Ford Focus 2 Manual

    We replace the trailing arm of the rear suspension of Ford Focus 2 if it is deformed, as well as if it is damaged (ruptures, peeling of rubber) or severe wear of the silent blocks. We carry out the work on an inspection ditch or overpass. Remove the rear wheel from the side of the arm being replaced. We clean the threaded connections of the lever and treat them with a penetrating liquid such as WD-40. Remove the spring from the side of the arm being replaced using zip ties (see “Replacing the suspension spring”).

    We install an adjustable stop or a hydraulic jack under the lower rear arm at the junction of it with the trailing arm, and using the stop, raise the arms so that the rear suspension takes the “car on wheels” position.

    We remove the three holders of the wheel speed sensor wires from the holes in the trailing arm.

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the wheel speed sensor.

    Using a 10mm head, unscrew the self-tapping screw securing the stop of the parking brake cable sheath...

    ...and remove the stop from the lever hole.

    We disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber from the trailing arm (see “Replacing the shock absorber for Ford Focus 2”).

    Using a 15mm socket, unscrew the two bolts securing the lever to the body...

    ...and remove the trailing arm.

    Install the new trailing arm in reverse order. We finally tighten the threaded connections to the prescribed torques (see “Appendices”) in the “vehicle on wheels” position.

    Ford Focus 2 rear suspension repair

    Even if this is not related to the topic of construction, which dominates this site, I still haven’t found a sensible manual for repairing the Focus rear suspension, collecting information in fits and starts on the forums. Hope it's useful to someone! Go.

    All owners of second Focuses sooner or later face rear suspension repairs. The first thing that comes up is the idea of visiting a car service center, where for this procedure they will announce a price comparable to the purchase of a used Zhiguli. It’s not the service’s fault, the idea belonged to Henry Ford, who proposed selling cheap cars and expensive spare parts for them, but that’s not about that now. If the owner of the Focus has everything in order with his hands, tools and has a piece of land or a garage, then there is an option to save money and repair everything with your own hands. In this article, using my own example, I will show you how to do this. We will talk about the Ford Focus 2 pre-styling station wagon 2006.

    When do you need to change silent blocks?

    There is no routine replacement for these parts. The manufacturer says that these elements are designed to last the entire life of the car, but Russian drivers manage to wear out 3-4 sets of rubber bands in the suspension over the course of 7-8 years of driving. You should be attentive to any manifestations of transport malfunctions so as not to miss the moment of replacement.

    The main indicators are as follows:

    • in the rear of the car, when driving, knocking noises appeared that resembled the beating of metal on metal;
    • when the car rocks, small knocks are heard in the rear, which are heard on the body;
    • When examining the elements of the rear suspension, damage to the silent blocks, ruptures and delamination of rubber are visible;
    • when turning at high speed, the rear of the car skids, there is uncertainty in control;
    • At high speeds, the suspension wobbles in the rear, there are vibrations that were not there before;
    • The rear tire wear is uneven; this may also be due to other problems in the chassis.

    Rear silent blocks wear out most often by 100,000 km. If you operate the Focus on poor-quality roads, then wear may already occur by 30,000 km. It all depends on the nature of the trip, braking for potholes and careful driving in general. Also, the reason for the rapid failure of rear chassis elements can be the installation of low-quality parts.

    We change the rear silent blocks of the rear levers on a Ford Focus 2 with our own hands

    Unlike cheaper models, the rear suspension of the second generation Ford Focus has a modern, complex design. This multi-link system, which provides independent suspension of the rear wheels. Thanks to this suspension design, the car received a soft, comfortable ride, good lateral and longitudinal stability. But, as you know, the more parts there are in a system, the more difficult it is to repair. How the Ford Focus rear suspension works and what algorithm is used to replace the rear silent blocks of the rear control arms, how to choose the right ones instead of the original, we’ll figure it out today.

    When to change rear control arm silent blocks on Ford Focus 2

    The wear is immediately visible.

    There is no need to explain to anyone that a silent block is a rubber-metal bushing to dampen vibrations and reduce the load on suspension elements.

    The fact that they have their own tensile strength is also understandable. Replacing rear suspension silent blocks may be necessary after 80–100 thousand mileage, and the following are considered signs of malfunction:

    • knocking and creaking in the rear axle area;
    • car instability during sudden lane changes and cornering;
    • the car pulls to the side when braking;
    • uneven wear of the rubber on the rear wheels;
    • broken wheel alignment angles of the rear wheels.

    If you do not notice the severe wear of the silent blocks in time, then in addition to repairs, you can spend heavily on replacing suspension parts and new tires. And safety along the way will also be at risk.

    What silent blocks will we install?

    Repairing the rear suspension sometimes involves not replacing silent blocks, but completely replacing the arms. Firstly, it’s easier, and secondly, there will be a guarantee that the suspension geometry will be preserved.

    New silent blocks have been installed.

    What's the result?

    Taking into account the above information, we can conclude that the rear suspension of the Ford Focus 2 is quite comfortable and reliable, but only if driven on good roads. However, as practice shows, even when operating a vehicle in the CIS, many components and suspension parts are capable of traveling at least 100 thousand km.

    The main thing is to use original parts or high-quality analogues, as well as timely correct minor problems and regularly carry out diagnostics of the vehicle’s chassis as a whole, as well as separately check the rear suspension.

    Which silent block manufacturers meet the “price-quality” requirement?

    When you independently replace the silent blocks of the front lever on a Ford Focus 2, in a garage, without installing a press, if you don’t have a hammer with a chisel and an angle grinder with a vice on hand, it makes no sense to remove the lever in order to change the silents. The process will be long and painful.

    How much does it cost to change front arm silent blocks?

    Since replacing the rear silent blocks of a Ford Focus 2 requires several hours of work, the service will charge you about 2 thousand rubles for such a procedure. The price of one rear silent block of the front suspension arm, if you buy Lemforder 33413 01, will cost 1400 rubles, and the price of the front silent block Lemforder 33412 01 will cost 340 rubles. So the minimum price for replacing the rear silent blocks of Focus 2 will cost 3,500 rubles. and including the cost of the front one, you can add another 300 rubles to this price. If you don’t have the tools needed to press out and press in silent blocks, you can use the services of a press in a car service center and it will cost around 1 thousand. There is an option for replacing silent blocks that is much simpler, but somewhat more expensive, for this you will just need to buy a lever assembly, which will cost you will need a little less than 6,000 rubles, but you will only need to replace the lever, which is much easier to do.

    According to the manufacturer's recommendation, silent blocks on a Ford Focus need to be replaced every 30 - 40 thousand km.

    Tools for replacing the silent blocks of the Focus 2 front suspension arm

    A set of keys and heads, in particular, must be present:

    • heads for 15,18, 21, 22, keys are the same;
    • hammer with chisel and grinder;
    • vice, jack;
    • It is also advisable to have vedeha, graphite and fine sandpaper.

    How to replace silent blocks of levers on Focus

    Dismantling is often done by sawing off, and installation by pressing or hammering (to make the silent block fit easier, you can use WD-40 or a soap solution, but in no case lubricant). Both silent blocks can be changed only with the lever removed.

    The process of dismantling the lever and replacing silent blocks

    In the photo with comments you can clearly see what awaits you in order to decide what is easier - replacing the Ford Focus 2 silent blocks with your own hands or entrusting this matter to specialists.

    First of all, jack up, remove the wheel and unscrew the ball joint.

    If there is no special puller, then to make it easier to remove the ball joint, you can press it with a jack and knock it out using a tool.

    Features of replacing silent blocks

    A special feature of the silent blocks used on the Focus 2 rear suspension is their design.

    Its metal component is a plate with two eyes, through which the trailing arm is attached to the car body.

    The edges of this plate protrude significantly beyond the rubber component of the silent block, so it will not be possible to use a device for pressing out conventional silent blocks here.

    To replace the silent block, you can use a conventional three-jaw puller and bushing.

    The bushing can be made from a section of thick-walled pipe with an internal diameter of 35-40 mm.

    It is enough to take a piece 70 mm long. The hole on one side needs to be sealed.

    To do this, you will need a thick-walled washer, without a hole in the center, the diameter of which must correspond to the outer diameter of the pipe.

    For convenience, this washer can be welded to the pipe, making something like a glass, but you don’t have to do this; it is enough to place the prepared washer on a section of pipe before pressing out.

    The sequence of pressing out is as follows: on the one hand, a bushing is placed on the silent block, while the protruding eye goes inside it.

    The puller's jaws grip the edges of the lever, the puller screw, which should rest against the washer on the bushing, is slowly turned in and the bushing squeezes out the silent block.

    Pressing in a new silent block is done in exactly the same way. It is only important that the length of the legs and the puller screw is sufficient.

    Or you can use a 22 head and carefully hit only the inner ring.
